Show Bobcats Defeat Escalante 89-53 Dy John Yardley Pangutlch High avenged an earlier loss to cross-county rival Escalante last Thursday In Panguitch 89-53. Bryce Valley, meanwhile, lost to Wayne on the road 68-36. At Panguitch, the Bobcats used a "chaser" on high scoring Clint Porter and then played "run and gun" themselves to outdistance the visitors. The Moquis actually played the Bobcats even in the first and fourth quarters, but were doubled in the second and outscored 22-7 in the third. By falling so far behind in the middle, the Escalante team could not get back. Coach Jim Smith's team remained disciplined, however, and worked hard, but just could not get their shots to fall. Panguitch, meantime, was playing as good perhaps as they have played all year. It was a fine team effort with four players in double figures, and the second team coming in and contributing gas well. Heath Sartinl continued his outstanding play with 24 points, Nate Brinkerhoff hit 16 and Dave Ipson, the chaser on defense, hit 10 to go along with the 10 of DeWayne Sawyer. Wayne Sawyer scored 9 and Ralph Perkins 7 off the bench to give Panguitch a lift. For Escalante, Ricky Crawford nailed 15, while Porter and Bacon hit for 13 each. Bacon hit consistently Inside for the Moquis and the entire team was limited only by the unusually tough shooting percentage. After playing a super JV game, freshman Matt Listen scored five to give the Moquis some added help. At Bicknell the Mustards could never manage a quarter better than 12 points. The big Wayne tandem of Dennis Laird and Mark Glassmeyer combined to keep the BV team off the boards and to a large extent, off the scoreboard. The two combined for 34 points. For the Mustangs of Coach Clare Ramsay, the Feltners, Tim and Trent, scored 13 and 12 respectively, to lead the scoring attack. Four of the BV starters fouled out before it was all said and done. In other league games, Piute stopped Gunnison 66-57, to remain atop the Division one standings. |
