Show Exciting Adventure Waits Travelers in Bach Country (Editors note: The following article is written by Myra Miller. She and her husband, Dell, love to get out In the beautiful back country of Garfield County) If you want to get out into the mountains, away from it all, take any of the graveled roads leading out of Panguitch. West, the scenery is beautiful cedar, pinion, ponderosa and mountain mahogany. Breathtaking views, good arrowhead hunting. Good to camp overnight with camper or trailer. East, the 'Lime Kiln' road goes through highly colored red and green hills. Many bristle cone pines, many deep canyons, strange formations and sheer gray cliffs. Arrowhead country. Sixteen miles east of Panguitch the road turns left and comes out at Sanford or turns right and eventually comes out at Red Canyon. It is best for two parties to go together as it is a dry weather road. There are many roads south of town take any of these for an hour or so you will see some interesting country. East hills are especially good for rock hounds, beautiful agate of every color. For longer trips from Panguitch go to Bryce Canyon National Park where there are facilities for the travelers. Kodachrome State Park has beautiful red rock formation, red sand tall spires, good road, excellent campgrounds. Drive a few miles farther to Grosvener Arch. Escalante and Boulder are on U-12; spectacular scenery along the highway. Be sure to go to Edson Alvey's Museum in Escalanate and on to Boulder to the "Anasazi Indian Village" approximately 200 miles round trip from Panguitch. Pine Lake has Forest Service campgrounds, beautiful senery, good fishing. For a nice trip go north when leaving this arfea and see the old grist mill in the canyon above Antimony then on to Otter Creek state Park where there is excellent fishing. Then follow U-62 back to US-89, then on south to Panguitch. Seventeen miles southwest of Panguitch is Panguitch Lake. There are Forest Service campgrounds, many resorts, cabins, food and boats, excellent fishing. Thirteen miles past Panguitch Lake on an all-weather road is Cedar Breaks, beautiful forest and mountain streams (good for fishing) and meadows. Brian Head Peak can be reached by car at 11,315 ft. elevation. Brian Head Ski resort is nearby. Travel a few more miles to U-14, turn left to Navajo Lake, Duck Creek Campgrounds (good fishing) past Movie Ranch, through beautiful scenery onto Todd's Junction. Turn left again, past the fish hatchery road, through Hatch and north 15 miles to Panguitch.
