Show Desert Downs Races Slated Mar 6 and 7 in Escalante ESCALANTE The annual Desert Downs race meet will be held at the Escalante track May 6 and 7. Throughbred and quarter horses will be in the races, which will include eight races daily, with the derby and futurity races for each breed scheduled. Racing will begin each day at 2 p.m. There has been a new metal inside rail installed this spring by the riding club members, financed through special park and recreational federal funds matched by club moneys. Escalante High School vocational students, under the direction of instructor Dennis Lott, have done the cutting and majority of the welding of the rail. Other major Improvements including grandstand improvements, landscaping, painting and chain link fence in front of the spectator section will be done this summer. Club officers encourage local support to this race meet as proceeds of this annual event go into the support and sponsorship of many community and school functions such as sponsoring the band and basketball team, financial backing for the Escalante High School Rodeo club etc. In the past, the club has helped sponsor delegates to girls state, Miss Garfield competition, Miss Utah com- petition as well as financial donations towards school improvements. Local support is necessary for the success of this annual race meet. A western dance with Val Veater Orchestra will be held on Friday night, May 6 at the Escalante High School gym at 9 p.m. |
