In a letter to Mrs. Mary L. Goodwin, major kleagle of the women of the Klan in Pennsylvania and New York, he said in part: The Sylvan Heights board asked me to extend this invitation to you so that there would be no misunderstanding at all on your part. There are Protestant children in the Catholic institution now and there will be no proselyting. Your children would have exactly the same care as the others, which I may state is excellent. Hightower, convicted of the murder of Father Patrick Heslin of Colma, California, five years ago and sentenced to life imprisonment in the penitentiary at San Francisco, is going blind. He is now barely able to read. Hightower is a broken man. When he entered the prison his complexion was florid, but now his face is as gray as his hair which is rapidly becoming white. The crime for which he was sentenced shocked the country by its brutality. Father Heslin was summoned, presumably to attend a sick call, was driven to a shack and, as lie entered, was struck with an ax and killed. The Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus was in session in San Francisco at the time, and the supposition was that Hightower planned to collect a large ransom. He was captured through a ruse, in which a reward was offered for information as to the missing Fathers whereabouts. He himself led the police to where he had buried the murdered priest.
