Show THE INTERMOUNTAIN CATHOLIC the mind of the convert. It is human nature to take the course of least resistance. Some might call it temptation but, regardless of the name, it is an influence that works deadly if left to reign free. And out of such conflict are born impressions and views which are of lasting importance. Books such as Rebuilding a Lost Faith and other discussions by converts should be given more attention by those born into the Church. The Catholic knows about his own faith but too many are weak in knowledge of how their Church appears to the outsider, particularly the antagonistic outsider. I do not mean here the opponent of the irreconcilable type, who sees only the bad and in blind to the good; this type must be totally ignored. I mean, however, the individual who is willing to weigh everything as he finds it and let the faith stand upon its merits, which is all the Catholic can ask. The convert is just this type. He does not wish to condemn, for is he not looking for a faith for himself? His approach will be skeptical but friendly. My impression is that the spiritual wanderer will go to a lot of Churches before he will come to the Catholic, which makes his impressions all the more rich with meaning. A CONVERT. The Churchs Use of the Scriptures Certain groups outside the Catholic Church likely to regard as a novelty, and as a concession to evangelical precedents, the program adopted by the Gospel Congress of Italy, with the Holy Fathers approval, for the use of the Sacred Scriptures in the work of moral and spiritual regeneration now being accomplished in that country. This program includes the preparation of a standard Italian text of the Gospel, the encouragement of scriptural reading by the laity at the meetings of organizations, and the distribution of copies of the New Testament in the Army. A Cardinal presided at the Congress which took this action and many bishops, monsignori and priests attended its sessions.
