But though the film carried off the top prize at the 1951 Venice Film Festival and became a major hit in this country and Europe, the exotic Rashomon is one of the least characteristic of the masters o work. Rashomon" is an extremely orderly. medieval fable about disorder about the impossiin the universe bility of ones ever arriving at objective truth: A merchant and his wife, traveling through a forest, are accosted by a bandit. The wife is raped by the bandit and the merchant is murdered. In the subsequent investigation, four witnesses, including the dead husband (who tesitifies through a medium), offer four different versions of what actually happened. video cassette This English-dubbe- d of Rashomon is far from satisfactory. The disembodied voices on the soundtrack include some that sound (that is, vaguely Japanese) and one (which substitutes for Toshiro Mifunes as the bandit) that sounds like that of a Brooklyn godfather. To watch the cassette is to see two different films simultaneously Kurosawas and the one made by a d dubbing director.
