Walkers Funny How Time Slips y Associated Press Writer - Tenn. Billy Walker, jjhe country singer, had just returned from Kansas City, Kan., after a benefit concert in 1963. But hes seen a change away from his traditional style of country music brand of music to a that he says has diminished individ. . uality. Country music used to be stylist singers, Walker said. You could tell Lefty Frizzell from Roy Acuff, and ' Loretta Lynn from Tammy Wynette. But the groups now all sound alike. You can put a name on 50 groups and they all sound alike. You cannot put chocolate and vanilla and strawberry and pistachio in the same bowl and make everyone like it, he said. The style of music has changed, but ballet doesnt change a whole lot; classical music doesn't change, or jazz. But the powers who control the record companies demand that country music be changed. Walker continued, People have asked me why the Grand Ole Opry doesnt get some new blood. What is new blood? Were not producing individual stars in country music like we used to; were producing groups who all sound alike. Away ge feeling. here was something that both-m- e all day, he said. I called dys (Hughes, a pilot) wife to jje sure everything was OK. hours later, Walker and the w old found out that singer Patsy CliQe and three others, including Hughes, had died in a plane crash. Walker was supposed to have been on that plane, as the group returned frdm the benefit concert he had arranged. However, he flew ahead on a commercial flight because his father-in-lahad just suffered a heart attack. Country singer Hawkshaw Haw-kinwho also died in the crash, had givn Walker his ticket and remained behind to fly on the private plane. X felt partly responsible, the Walker said in an interview.
