Gary Hart has moved into a strong early lead for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination, following Sen. Gallup Poll By George Gallup Jr. Edward Kennedy's withdrawal from contention. In the latest test, Hart receives 47 percent of Democrats' combined first- - and second-plac- e nomination votes, more than twice as many as runners-uNew York Gov. Mario Cuomo (22 percent), businessman Lee Iacocca (18 percent) or Rev. Jesse Jackson (16 percent). Next are New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley and Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley (8 percent each), West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller (6 percent) and Gov. Mark White of Texas (5 percent). None of the nine other persons on a list of 17 mentioned as possible contenders receives more than 3 percent of Democrats votes. In a test conducted last June, in which Sen. Kennedys name was included, he was the choice of 46 percent of Democrats to 31 percent for Sen. Hart. Hart also is the early front-runnamong Independents, who may vote in some states' Democratic primaries, winning 35 percent of their nomination votes to 19 percent for Cuomo and 18 percent for Iacocca.
