Ed Harris, in another excellent performance, is Wing, a respected newspaper reporter who came back to his small home town after a stint on a big paper in Atlanta. I couldnt see the sun shine for all the tall buildings, he explains at one point. His reasons for returning are much more complex. Blair Brown is Kat, wife of Jimmys best friend who is now dead. Kat, like her deceased husband, is a person who fights for the things in which she believes. The cause she fights for in A Flash of Green is a bay being threatened by land developers. They want to fill it and build a luxury community. The third major player in this drama is Elmo Bliss, played effectively by Richard Jordan, a fine actor who most recently appeared as the murderer in The Mean Season." Here Jordan has a much more substantial role, and he makes the most of it. 'Bliss is a small town politician with big aspirations. This developto ment is his ticket to the big time the governorship of Florida. He calls in a lot of old debts in this quest for power. One of them is to reporter Jimmy Wing. "A Flash of Green is about Wings dilemma. Hes a good reporter who, at this time of his life, is very vulnerable. His wife is in the advanced stages of a debilitating illness; he has strong affections for his late best friends wife. And now, a very powerful man comes to him, offering money and making threatening overtures. Wing, for his own reasons, says yes. The moral ramifications of Wings decision is the focus of A Flash of Green." This isnt a story about issues; its a story about people, and how emotions, stress and other human foibles influence our lives. In Jimmy Wing, Harris gives us a character whom we immediately like and care about. Even when his judgment is less than sound, we sympathize with him. Harris illuminates the forces tugging on Jimmy Wing, and allows us to understand this oftentimes contradictory man. As the primary forces playing on and Jimmy Wings life, Blair Brown h Richard Jordan also deliver Kat Browns performances. frustrates us, much like she frustrates Wing, because she doesnt beof the gin to understand the depths Wing. are upon hat playing pressures Richard Elmo Bliss, As the oily Jordan is particularly good. Here is a man with immense political savvy. He is most convincing when he is lying. A Flash of Green is one of those rare movies that succeeds mainly because it portrays a time and place so well. On the periphery of this story are bits and pieces of life in the South allusions to the in the early 60s went to viowhich ultra-righ- t groups communitheir to lent lengths keep ties "pure and wholesome; the pervasive attitude that development and to a failing growth were solutions fishing economy. All this background, along with a fine ensemble of actors, adds up to an and conunusually involving, fresh theme. an age-ol- d about story vincing succeeds of Green A Flash Where most is in making the characters in this drama complex and real, and not mere symbols for political and moral points of view. A Flash of Green begins a limited run Friday at the Blue Mouse. IN THE editor tells a story of political corruption during the early 1960s in Florida in A Flash of Green." The film is adapted from John D. MacDonalds novel. It takes its title from the color the sky turns for an instant after the sun has set over the ocean. There isnt always a flash of green, just an occasional one a good omen for those who witness it. Their lives are about to change for the better. Jimmy Wing, the main character, experiences more than one change in his life during the course of this film.
