Show M9 The Salt Lake Tribune Friday, February 7, 1986 Largest organ celebrates 75th year By Carolyn Belardo United Press International The worlds PHILADELPHIA largest musical instrument, which has tingled the ears and tantalized the souls of thousands of music lovers since the days of President Taft, is celebrating its 75th anniversary in characteristic grand style. The 30,067-pip- e organ, listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest fully functional musical instrument in the world, will resound classiFriday in its first cal concert in 50 years. The stage: the Grand Court of the John Wanamaker department store in Center City Philadelphia. The organ, which has six keyboards, 451 stops and 964 controls, was first heard in 1911 when the stores landmark Renaissance-styl- e building was inaugurated by President William Howard Taft. Since then, the organ, which is played for customers daily, has been used in thousands of recitals. Special concerts in the organs early days attracted as many as 15,000 people. Keith Chapman, who has become known around the world as the Wanamaker organist as well as an accomplished musician in his own rite, has entertained Wanamakers shoppers since 1966. To some extent after 20 years I have become a bit blase about the instrument, Chapman said Wednesday. Actually, this concert has renewed my excitement bout the organ. Its putting me in the position of taking part in some history that has not taken place since the 1930s. Twenty years to the day since he and the organ began the!- - marriage, Chapman will Friday perform works by Bach, Debussy, Delius, Dupre and - N BEATABLE WIRE full-fledg- 11 DISCOUNTS! Originally built for the St. Louis Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904, the organ was purchased in 1909 by John Wanamaker, who sought to bring more music into the lives of the people. Wanamaker had the organ transported by 13 train boxcars to Philadelphia where it was set up in a second-floor balcony overlooking the central court. Since then, the organ has been enlarged from 140 stops to the present 451 stops and from 10,059 pipes to almost triple that number. One of the more memorable concerts was in 1936 when the famous Belgian organist Charles M. Courbois performed with 100 members of the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Leopold Stokowski. The claim that it is the biggest organ in the world has not gone unchallenged. Atlantic City, N.J., officials claim the organ in their Convention Hall is larger, but Chapman said that has never been proven. DETECTOR LITE The easy way to check for current Troubadours hit funny bone fuel bill 1149s By George Kanzler Newhouse News Service NEW YORK Two of the most creative minds working in the contemporary folk music tradition today are Tom Paxton and Loudon Wain-wrigIII, modern troubadours who can strike straight to the funny bone with unerring wit. But while Paxton views the world with the keen eye of the satirist for lifes follies and foibles, Wainwright seems to tumble right into the fray and emerge with songs wrested from his quixotically viewed experiences. One Million Lawyers and Other Disasters (Flying Fish Records) features some of Paxtons very best topical satires, songs fashioned by commentary on political and social news items and trends. The title song is a good example, a folk ballad set in a mock-tragi- c mode reacting to the news that in 10 years were gonna have 1 million lawyers . . . how much can a poor nation stand? Paxtons reactions to the news range from the whimsical (We Can Have the Olympics Over At Our House) to the melancholy (Who Will about farmers Feed The People? the macabre from their land); losing black humor of Come And Grow Old With Me In Colorado, where well blow ourselves Rocky Mountain high, to the hilarious scatology of If You Love That Politician (Pull the Chain), about a political straw poll tabulated through fluctuations in a towns water pressure. A master of parody and pastiche, Paxton also offers his Manhattan lyrics to the melody of Ghost Riders in the Sky," an ode to urbanity called "Yuppies In the Sky with a ghostly refrain of Condos for sale, condos to ht buy." Then there are songs written from unusual perspectives: a man trapped in a computer, a potato crusading against vegicide; a hipsters reaction to America losing the Americas cup after 132 years ("I hope it takes twice as long to get it back"); and advice from a millionaire who got rich selling hammers to the Pentagon. ) 420-48- 9 Works automatically Reg. 99.95 Rig. 1.99 MOON RIVER! - I Easily distinguishes 110 or 220 power LED readout An electrician's must Easy to install Spray Mist Humidifier Saves up to 20 on . . .
