Show 1 6M Tbe Salt Lake Tribune Friday, February 7, 1986 For the record Those Everly Brothers are better than ever By Tom McCarthey Tribune Staff Writer One of rock n rolls earliest and most influential acts, The Everly Brothers, were known for their distinctive, almost country vocal duets. In the late 50s and early 60s Phil and Don Everly appealed to all facets of the pop music world, from easy lisfrom tening audiences to teen-agerrock n rollers to country-wester- n fans, thanks to the twosomes nasally, yet polished, sound. They had a string of smash hits, including Bye, Bye Love, Wake Up previously released songs from the early THE EVERLY BROTHERS, Born Yesterday (Mercury) The singing brothers from Kentucky have come up with a gem. Born Yesterday, produced by longtime fan Dave Edmunds, is pure pop in sound, pure American in substance. The Everly Brothers have recorded an album that is fresh, modern, and a delight to listen to. As always the harmonies are immensely catchy, encouraging listeners to sing along after only a verse or so. Theres rock and blues, country and rhythm and blues on the new record. But most importantly, Phil and Don inject their vocal magic into the proceedings, singing about love and heartaches. The Everlys have chosen some interesting material here, performing tunes written by such diverse artists as Rank & File, the Sutherland Brothers, Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler. s, Record review Bird Dog and Crying Little Susie, In the Rain. 70s. On this record theyve proven that theyve only gotten better with age. This is RCAs "Home Again (RCA) attempt to take advantage of the Everly Brothers revival. It is an interesting compilation, if only for the selection of songs. John Denvers "Poems, Prayers and Albert Hamand Promises mond's The Air That I Breathe are softly done but have that unmistakable Everly feel.
