Show Armand Assante as Belizaire By Terry Orme Tribune Staff Writer PARK CITY The thing that strikes you after spending a day or two here at the United States Film Festival is the diver, i y of stories being told, the different worlds into which these filmmakers take you There's Wayne W'ang's affectionate "Dim Sum, a funny and poignant portrait of a young San Francisco woman who must choose between her own independence and the assistance she provides her widowed mother Wang takes you inside this extended family like few filmmakers do. He gives you a sense of these people, their culture, their worldview. At the same time, he never reduces them to symbols. It is an intimate, entertain- - ing work. Then theres the documentary "Contrary Warriors, a film directed by three Montana women Connie Po-tePamela Roberts and Beth Ferris. It tells a remarkable story about a remarkable man Robert Yellow-tai- l Yellowtail was 97 when this film was made He was near the end of a long life devoted to championing the lands and heritage of his people the Crow Indians The film documents Yellowtail s public service, which began in 1910 when he traveled from his home in Montana to Washington, D.C. to argue the case of his people whose lands were about to be put up for sale. His foe in this political battle was a Montana congressman. Yellowtail won. As time went on, Yellowtail would win some and lose others "Contrary Warriors is a moving, sympathetic, and at times uplifting portrait of the spirit of a people. Contrary Warriors is preceded at the festival by a beautifully shot, short film called Cowgirls. Made film by Nancy Kelly, this tells three different stories about modern-dacowgirls. The portraits that emerge are of women (and girls) ranging in age from 8 to 68 who go about their ranch jobs with savvy and skill. They handle cutting horses with dexerity, buck bales of alfalfa and smile about it. They work with animals and the land because they love it. I dont really know how I got this job," says a husband, as he cooks breakfast as his wife goes about the morning chores in the cold morning outside.
