Show 4D The Salt Lake Tribune, Tuesday, January Little Brother Josh Has to Take High Expectations for Granted 14, 1986 By Joe Baird Tribune Sports Writer What's in a name? Well, plenty of pressure and high expectations if it's Grant, and you happen to be 9 and been annointed by several national basketball publications as the best high school player in the state. All of which, for good or ill, is exactly the situation East center Josh Grant finds himself in, in this, his senior season. Grant, you'll recall, had come out of his junior year as a skinny center who had carried a so-s-o East team into the tournament, was named to every major team for his efforts and then headed a Utah BCI contingent that went against the best prep talent in the nation over the summer. All of that on its own probably would have gotten him enough attention. But there was also the name. You know the name by now, surely. Josh, of course, is the younger brother of Greg Grant and Nathan Grant, who were pretty fair high school players themselves at East and West, respectively, and now play for Rod Tueller up at Utah State with Greg an selection for two years running, and Nate a solid contributor off the bench. Add to all that Joshs growth he gained an inch and 20 pounds over the summer and a better game thanks to efforts, and presto: A blue chipper with blue chip expectations surrounding him. Grants reaction? So be it. Sure I feel some pressure, he said following a Leopard workout last week. But most of it comes from within myself. I want to excel and become as good as I can be. Theres a certain amount felt from the family as well, he added, although its not unwelcome. "My brothers and my dad Fifth Circuit Court Judge Paul Grant have pretty much made me what I am, so if Im out there loafing they know it and if I play well they Lost Won- - School Lott Wttk 6-- CLASS 4-- A 6-- 8 4-- d all-sta- all-st- head-to-hea- d n handed down through the family. But Grant has also developed his own specialties over the past three seasons under East Coach Eddie Palubinskas. "Dad taught me how to shoot, hold the ball and find the rhythm, he explained, while the passing has come from my brothers. The most natural thing thats come to me is the rebounding. Ive got good anticipation. The Leopard center has added a few other wrinkles to his game as well. Whereas Grant was pretty much relegated to the inside a year ago, he will now occasionally operate both on the break or from the wing in the East halfcourt game and take the jump shot from the know it. To say that his father, Greg and Nathan made him the player he is really isnt much of an understatement, because the four of them have been playing together in the Grant family gymnasium since Josh was knee-higto, well, a point guard. Dad never really encouraged me to play before then," Grant recalled. But when I was 12, he, Nate, Greg and I would go down to the gym. And being the youngest, he noted, hed take the most lumps and end up screaming and crying. "Today its a family feud, he smiled, with Greg and I agaipst Dad and Nate. Grant didn't need to add that it's also a rather large feud, as Nathan stands and his Greg father 7 v2. Hes got the full game now, Palubinskas said recently of his center. Once he has the bulk and strength, theres no telling how good hell get. The extra strength and weight have helped a lot, Grant agreed. I think I'm mentally stronger this season too. I cared about winning last all-odesire wasnt year, but the there like it is now. Grant still wont be mistaken for Charles Atlas, or Charles Barkley, for that matter, out on the floor. But beefing up from 165 to 185 this year has made a difference. And Josh range by hopes to be in the the time college rolls around. College? Hmmmm. Grant hasnt made any decisions about that yet. And he wont need to for awhile, as hell be going on an LDS mission after high school just as his brothers did following their prep careers. He will say, however, that BYU, Utah and USU have each expressed considerable interest in acquiring his services, and the chances are pretty good that hell stay in state to go to school. The catch is, he doesnt want to be a center. "I would hope I wont be playing inside in college, he said. "I really see myself more as a forward. Maybe even a small forward." That's a ways down the road, though. For now, the plan is to help get his team back into the state tournament, and maybe even win the Re- if the enigmatic Leopards can shake their e image. "Right now, I guess were kind of like the Detroit Lions, he laughed. We play great at home and then let down on the road. It all gets back to that mental toughness thing. But in the long term, if we play the way we know we can that is if our good team shows up and were then I think we can give consistent Bountiful a run. Then once youre in the tournament you only need to win four games. gion Four title along the way Jekyll-and-Hyd- h 6-- Volkswagen Intermountain Holds The Line 6-- 7 6-- Tribune Staff Photo by Paul Frouohton Josh Grant slams one home off the break while Brightons Richard Saunders can only look on in recent action. (AP) coach Joe Yukica, who refused to accept being fired by Dartmouth College, regained his job Monday for one more season after reaching agreement with the school over a contract dispute that attracted national attention. this case shows that a con;I hope is a contract dnd that I can go tract out saying I retired rather than being summarily fired," Yukica said. He said he hoped his case would give administrators cause to pause when they're under pressure and say, We have a contract with this coach.' Yukica was removed as coach in Ex-Moonshi- ner - Gains Reagan Pardon Junior CHARLOTTE, N C. (UPI) Johnson, a stock car racing team owner, says he is "tickled" over a pardon for a moonshimng conviction. "I didn't think it was possible to be any happier than getting into the North Carolina Hall of Fame, but I feel that way now," said Johnson, 54 "Really, I'm so tickled I can't express my appreciation to everyone, especially President Reagan, in words 1985 November by Athletic Director Ted Leland, who said the Ivy League school would pay Yukica for the remainder of the contract to June 1987. But in a rare move by a coach in any college or professional sport, Yukica fought the firing and won a court injunction that blocked e school from searching for another coach. Dragging this on will only hurt the students and I can't let that happen, Leland said Monday. This dispute has disrupted the college's athletic program too long. It is now too late to conduct a search that will produce the kind of coach that Dartmouth needs." The pardon is something wanted." Ive really Reagan's pardon is a sign of forgiveness but does not erase Johnson's record of conviction or indicate his innocence.
