Show S.L. Firm Wins $6.5 Million Pact From Boeing Computer Services .i i By Joe Rolando Tribune Business Writer Evans & SuthSalt Lake erland Computer Corp. has received a more than (6.5 million order to provide Boeing Computer Services with a "computer image generation system" that will be used in the development of two new helicopter designs, it was announced Monday. Boeing's Vertol Support Division, Philadelphia, Penn., will use the system, known as the CT6, to produce imagery and sensory simulation" in an engineering flight simulator. A simulator creates the effect of certain equipment as it operates, in this case a helicopter. The CT6, which is part of the simulator, provides tha appropriate visual Images necessary to properly design the equipment. A prepared announcement from Evans L Sutherland about the order noted the CT6 system offers a new feature called "Advanced Surface Texturing," which enhances image details to create a more real world appearance. Evans & Sutherland spokesperson Susan Mickelsen said the company started 1985 with a backlog of orders amounting to about $15 million. But at the end of the year, the company's backlog orders amounted to more than 340 million. "Most of our orders are longterm, said Ms. Mickelsen. "So backlog orders are very good for us. Another sign of Evans & Sutherland's growth is the companys plan to construct a fifth building at its present location at the University of Utah Research Park within the next couple of years, said Ms. Michelsen. Most of the space, she said, will be devoted to research and development. Evans & Sutherland now occupies four buildings at University research park where it company conducts R&D, marketing and manufacturing. Stocks Rebound, But Traders Still Wary - NEW YORK (AP) Stock prices gained ground in subdued trading Monday, steadying after the sudden sell-of- f that hit the market last week. The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials, down 35.67 points last week, rose 7.00 to 1,520.53. Volume on the New York Stock Exchange slowed to 108.68 million shares from 122.78 million Friday. Analysts said many traders were waiting cautiously to see how the market will react if, as is widely expected, it is confronted with more news of a strengthening economy this week. Last week's slide was touched off by word that the unemployment rate had fallen to its lowest level in more than five years. Though that news was upbeat for business conditions generally, it was also taken as a distinctly negative portent for interest rates. Prices of long-tergovernment bonds, which move in the opposite direction from interest rates, dropped about 5 for every $1,000 in face value in Monday's activity. Among the items on the agenda for the markets this week are the governments monthly reports on retail ofCo. made a fer for all its outstanding common stock Comdisco fell ltfr to 18. Late last week the company said it was contesting an Internal Revenue Service assessment of $200 million in back taxes and interest. Texaco, the volume leader on turnover of more than 1.3 million shares, to 31, and Pennzoil was slipped down 2 at 69Y. A judge ruled that Texaco wont be required to post a $12 billion bond in order to continue its legal fight with Pennzoil arising from its acquisition of Getty Oil. In the oil drilling and service sector, Schlumberger fell 1 V to 35 V and Halliburton 1 to 25. Analysts said investors were apparently fearful of more earnings disappointments in the industry, which has suffered along with the depressed energy economy. Walt Disney Productions gained 5V2 to 120. Late in the day the compastock split and ny announced a a dividend increase. GTE was actively traded, unchanged at 47 Vi. The company is reported to be considering spinning off its Sprint telephone business, which has been recording large operating losses. Both stocks fell during the first day of trading since U.S. District Court Judge Charles Brieant issued his decision late Friday in White Plains, N.Y. Pennzoil dipped $2 a share to $69.25, while Texaco edged down 50 cents to $31. Brieant ruled that Texaco would have to put up no more than $1 billion in security, marking Texacos first major victory in a legal dispute over its acquisition of Getty Oil Co. in 1984. He called the idea of requiring a company to post a $12 billion bond Texaco had argued the Texas law that would have required it to post a $12 billion bond while it appealed the damage judgment would destroy the nations third largest oil company, making the appeal meaningless. Pennzoil filed an appeal with the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York late Monday, asking for an expedited hearing. Monday. "Household items are anything that would not be purchased specifically for the teens own use groceries, gas for the car, things that typically are funded by Mom and Dad, Hauser said Monday. "The family is still funding the grocery purchases, but teens are doing the buying," he added. Hauser said results indicate 52 percent of the nations teen-ag- e girls, or about 8 million, do their familys weekly grocery shopping. Thats primarily because 50 percent of homes with teens have e a working mother, and an additional 20 percent have a part-tim- e working mother, he said. The three most popular performers in 1985, according to the survey, were Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and Prince. In assembling the survey, the firm sent questionnaires to 5,000 teens, and used 1,600 responses, 808 of them from boys. The youths were selected on the bases of age, sex, geography and race. Analysts agreed that the ruling significantly strengthened Texacos position and shifted the pressure on Pennzoil to reach a settlement rather than risk losing everything on appeal. Analysts said Monday's activity in the two stocks indicated that Wall Street appeared to be awaiting the outcome of that hearing before taking major decisions regarding either stock.
