Its the dismal science. Its not relevant. But we show them how its relevant. Lee Barber, administration manager for Internal Business Machines and a consultant to Cottonwood High School, said the hour and a half he spends weekly with the students is usually spent discussing the practical side of business. The students get the idea that maybe the business world is not all that bad, Mr. Barber said, adding I look forward to the day each week. I couldnt say enough good things about the program. The new program, called Project Business was started three years ago but has been in Utah since last spring with a pilot program of nine classes. The junior high program was started nine years ago but will not appear in Utah until next year. The textbook was developed with the support of major corporations and the AFL-CIwrote the chapter on labor, Mr. Cofield said. The state has adopted our textbooks," Mr. Cofield said. The program also has been independently evaluated and endorsed by the Formation Evaluation Research Associates, a Michigan-base- d group that evaluates educational programs. The whole course takes on a different image, said Chris Black, a teacher at Bingham High. Its more current. The students see economics in a different light. I am not sure the students are learning more or less than in a traditional class. I do know it is having a more profound impact, said Ray e knowledga-bl- about political issues was viewed, by the founding fathers, as one of the cornerstones of democracy. Economic issues, from the budget and trade deficits to unemployed and displaced workers, now dominate political issues. And economic literacy has become almost as important as basic literacy was 200 years ago. Junior Achievement of Utah Inc. has introduced a program called The Stairstep Approach to Economic Literacy. The program, now in 19 schools in the Salt Lake Valley, is designed to teach students the fundamentals of economics while teaching the fundamentals of business, said Philip Cofield, Junior Achievements Utah executive director. To implement the program Junior Achievement has drawn on its natural ally: the business community. the Called Project Business, course, in a senior high school class, is sponsored by a business for $750 and provides a manager who is a consultant to the class each day of the O week. Junior Achievement has traditionally been limited to extracurricular s set up programs in which their own businesses. The students also set up their own businesses as part of the economics course, the tie to the traditional Junior Achievement program. The students are not only learning the theory of economics, but also practicing it, Mr. Cofield said. Theres no course like this offered in the school system. The biggest problem we have is kids dont like teen-ager- S.L. Ad Agency Gets Contracts For Tourism , Hotel Utah Harris Love & ment as my economic course. It is the teachers responsibility to view of economgive a ics, he added. For many of students, profit is a r word, Mr. Black said. I dont think kids hear nearly enough of the side. The students also learn that business in not easy. It really taught me how difficult it is to start a business, said Daniel Novotny, a student at Cottonwood High d four-lette- School. My personal belief is the lack of understanding of economics is the greatest danger to us, Mr. Kartchner said. I am concerned about the budget deficits, trade deficits and lack of national economic policy. What we are doing is producing better citizens as well as businessmen, Mr. Cofield said. st Michael D. Gallivan, executive vice president and account supervisor at Harris & Love, said the firm went the extra mile to secure the new three-yea- r contract. We presented the board with a comprehensive marketing outline on which solid future plans could be made. This, along with a business review of what has been accomplished over the last 12 years, apparently convinced the board we should continue guiding the advertising effort. The contract to assist the Westin Hotel Utah in its advertising and promotion efforts is important because the coming months will be an especially busy and important time because of the hotel's 75th anniversary in 1986, according to Tom Hosea, general manager of the hotel. awarded two major advertising contracts. The agency will handle the summer and general Utah tourism advertising contract of the Utah Travel Council. That contract extends through fiscal year 1989. In addition, the company has been selected by the Westin Hotel Utah to conduct advertising and promotion activities. Harris & Love has served as the councils summer and general advertising agency for the past 12 years. Contracts are reviewed every three years. Tourism is such an important part of our economy, said Donald G. Ware, Harris & Love president, and the travel councils role in its development is vital.
