Show Jon Voight may have new hit By Rick Lyman Kt.lght-Ridde- r Newspapers NEW YORK Jon Voight glides into the room like a phantom, quiet and smooth, just a shade slower than life. Even when he reaches to shake hands, its easy and deliberate, a gentle clasp. The real strength is in his eyes, which make tight, spectral contact and do not waver. He seems thinner, too altogether in this aerie above Manhalighter ttans East Side. Voight is promoting a new movie Soviet-emigr- e director Andre Konchalovskys Runaway Train," a - thriller about escaped convicts aboard an locomotive. Based on an Akira Kurosawa script, it opened in New York and Los Angeles last month to reviews just strong enough to start the Hollywood rumor-mil- l speculating that it will earn the actor his third Oscar nomination. Voight is cloistered in a comfy suite of rooms with a narrow balcony wrapping around its northeast corner, the Queensboro Bridge sprawled across the dull East River and the bulky towers of Flatbush Avenue clustered at the south horizon. This is the of his New York publicist, and he moves around it very slowly, pointedly taking note of his surroundings, studying every knickknack. Im on a very spiritual bent these days, Voight says in a God is very much a part of my life now. I feel that we have all been given a certain amount of time during which, if we are lucky, we will come to touch the almighty power of the universe. I dont mean to sound religious. Im not religious, but I am very spiritual. My heart is filled with God. I find myself praying almost all the time, and I meditate very seriously in the morning and the evening. I truly believe that I am in active pursuit of this almighty power of the universe, and everything else in my life must take a back seat to that. And you know, there is something almost lama-lik- e about spiritual hushed Voights speech and ethereal gaze. You can practically smell the incense. A decade ago, Voight was one of the most celebrated and dependable actors in Hollywood everything about him seemed golden. Hed made a landmark movie de- office-apartme- near-whispe- r. but in John Schlesingers Midnight Cowboy" (1969), winning the New York Film Critics Circle award as the years best actor and an Academy Award nomimation. He was denied the Oscar, it was said, only because he was up against an aging John Wayne. He finally got one in 1978, playing a paraplegic Vietnam veteran in Hal Ashbys "Coming Home," which also won him best-actawards from the New York critics, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Cannes Film Festival. In between, he appeared in Mike Nichols anti-wa- r comedy, "Catch-2- 2 (1970), John Boormans wilderness thriller, Deliverance" (1972), Martin Ritts rural inspirational, Conrack" (1974), and Ronald Neame's Nazi thriller, The Odessa File" (1974). But after "Coming Home came one of the quickest and most precipitous declines in recent memory. Franco Zeffirellis remake of "The Champ (1979), with Voight playing the Wallace Beery role of the punchy prizefighter, was demolished by critics. He didn't make another movie for two years, and when he did, reteamed with Ashby, it was a disjointed disaster about Las Vegas gamblers called Lookin tc Get Out" that had limited release. He followed it up in 1983 with a roundly criticized and unsuccessful tear-jerkcalled Table for Five." The golden boy who had seemed, striding confidently alongside Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy, like an actor who would be around forever, suddenly seemed to be fading into obscurity. "It has been a very interesting career, hasnt it?" Voight says. And now comes Runaway Train. I first met Andre at a party live or six years ago, just after Id seen a film hed been involved with called Slave of Love, Voight says. Its getting late and the room is dimming, but Voight makes no move to turn on a light. I went over to him and bowed down. He demonstrates a mock chivalric grovel. It was funny, you know what I mean? A kid from Yonkers trying to act like a Russian. Anyway, he was such a charming man. I told him that he should come to America and make movies, and that Id love to work with him. In a telephone interview a few days earlier, Konchalovsky had remembered that very encounter and credited Voight with being the person most responsible for my coming to America. After Konchalovskys won the jury prize at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival, he came to Hollywood to work on some projects, including a couple with Voight. We are all here, Konchalovsky had said, all of us directors, standing in line in front of a Hollywood monster that is trying to devour us. One of the tricks is to be very careful to work on good projects with people you can trust. Thats why I wanted to work with Jon. But it was very hard convincing him to take the part. Voight remembers his decision to do Runaway Train. Hes a survivor, mean and pitiless. When he escapes from prison it's more to spite the warden than to be free. When he and his fellow escapee, Buck (Eric Roberts), hitch a ride on a locomotive that's out of control, it triggers a long, tense chase. "Andre was persistent, and the more I thought about it, the more It worked on me.
