The interview could not be inde- pendently confirmed and a spokesman for the Palestine Liberation Organization said the story was a fake. Abu Nidal, whose real name is al Banna, was once a former PLO representative in the Sudan and Iraq who split with PLO leader Yasser Arafat 12 years ago, claiming Arafat was too moderate in fighting Israel. Arafat issued a death sentence against him. Since then, Abu Nidal has gone underground and is believed to have been behind a series of terrorist operations that claimed hundreds of lives, including those of Arafats top aides. U S. officials recently said Nidal has been supported by Iraq, Syria and Libya and has, at different times, been sponsored by each country to stage attacks against its enemies.
