Yemen Leader Survives - ,, The MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) South Yepresident of Marxist-rule- d men has survived an assassination attempt, and leaders of the failed coup have been executed, the state-ru- n Aden Radio reported Monday. The radio said the conspirators against President Ali Nasser Mohammed included former President Abdul Fattah Ismail and Ali Ahmed Nasser Antar, the first deputy premier and a close associate of the president. The broadcast, monitored in Bahrain, said Ismail and Antar were summarily executed, and unidentified accomplices were detained. Ali Salem the minister of local administration, and Ali Shayie, a ranking member of the ruling Yemen Socialist Party, were also executed, the radio said. South Yemen is about the size of the state of Nevada and has a population of 2 million. It is on the southern end of the Arabian peninsula along the strategic shipping routes leading from the Indian Ocean past me Horn of Africa and into the southern end of the Red Sea. Ismail, a longtime Marxist-Lenin-iswas a former underground trade union leader. In past South Yemeni political struggles he emerged as one of the most political leaders. Three Britons trekked to the South Pole and were picked up Monday by U.S. aircraft after their support ship was crushed by ice and sank Saturday. The 21 members of the expedition aboard the ship Southern Quest took refuge on ice floes when the ship sank and were rescued by U.S. Coast Guard helicopters. The Britons were taken to McMur-d- o Sound, 900 miles from the South Pole, said a spokeswoman for the expedition's organizers. The aim of the expedition was scientific research in Antarctica and for a small party to walk to the South Pole in the footsteps of Scott, who died v ifh his four companions on the way back from the pole in 1912. Prime Minister Shimon Peres, who had threatened to bring down the national unity government if a consensus could not be reached, telephoned Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to inform him of the decision, a Peres spokesman said. Peres told Mubarak the main obstacle to improved relations had been cleared, and he expected speedy progress toward resolving outstanding issues, the spokesman said.
