(AP) Tommy Haughton became the youngest driver ever to win the Hambletonian Saturday when he piloted Speed Bowl to victory in the 5875,000 trotting classic at the Meadow-landTwenty-five-year-o- ' f , ' - .CM ld s. Jazz Cosmos finished second and Messerschmitt, a 40-- shot, finished third. Speed Bowl, a son of 1972 Hambletonian winner Super Bowl, scored by a neck over Jazz Cosmos, driven by Mickey McNichol. Another 3 Vi lengths back was Messerschmitt, a 40-- 1 shot. Conspicuous by their absence in the final were Mystic Park, winner of the Yonkers Trot, and Amdon. Each was eliminated in earlier heats. The 57th Hambletonian winner is trained by Hall of Famer Billy Haughton, the father of the winning driver. The elder Haughton, who has won four Hambletonians, drove Speed Bowl in his first race this year, then turned the reins over to his son. Speed Bowl, who captured the second division in impressive style, overtook the pace-settin-g Jazz Cosmos, winner of the first division, late in the stretch. Although Speed Bowl won only by a neck, he was in command with about 50 yards to go.
