Ovesons comment Friday came after Utah Gov. Scott Mathesons Committee on Executive Reorganization alleged earlier in the week that the commission was violating state law. The bipartisan committee, appointed by Matheson to recommend ways to streamline state government, said in its preliminary recommendations presented in Ogden this week that the commission is not working as a quorum as the law requires. The committee also said individual members of Tax Commission are spending the taxpayers money in violation of state law and that individual members have waived penalties and interet due from taxpayers without the consent of the majority of the commission. Other Allegations In addition, the committee alleged that commission members have been selecting expensive equipment, signing contracts and making budget decisions without the knowledge of all the commissioners. As far as criminal mismanagement, I cant say any more at this point, Oveson said. I have discussed it with the attorney general. Tax Commission Chairman David Duncan, however, said the allegations are a political hatchet job by the committee. The issues that they seem to be dwelling on are things that have happened in the past, he said. Duncan said an audit had pointed out some problems that he was working to correct. He also said the commission had changed its policy on waiving penalties and interest due from taxpayers. We now have a policy where any one commis- four-memb- Briefs Regional I 2 Ogden Police Seek 2 In Abduction Try OGDEN (AP) Ogden police are seeking two men in connection with an incident in which a man tried to pull a baby out of a car that was stopped at a red traffic light. Police Sgt. Clark Combe said Sherrie Kramer, son Eric by grabbing his leg rescued her as a man tried to pull him from the window of her pickup truck Thursday night. Combe said Ms. Kramer told police two men in a black car followed her from a parking lot until she stopped at a red traffic light at about 8:55 p.m. One of the men jumped out of the passenger side of the car and tried to pull Eric by his arm and shirt from the right window of Ms. Kramers pickup, said Combe. Ms. Kramer told police she grabbed the babys leg and held onto him until the man let go and got back in the car. The car drove away at a h igh speed, Combe said. Ms. Kramer continued to drive until she spotted some police officers handling a traffic problem and reported the incident, Combe said. sioner can abate up to $5,000. Amounts above that must be approved by the commission, he said. In the Past Duncan said that in the past, there was no limit on the amount any one commissioner could waive. Duncan said as much as $200,000 in interest and penalties has been abated during the past year by commission members, all of whom are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Legislature. Duncan also said he does not think any contracts were signed without a quorum of commission members. As far as major purchases of equipment, since last August by commission policy weve assigned commissioners over certain divisions and they run those divisions, he said. If they have money in the budget for equipment, theyre walcome to spend it.
