Show Tourist Activity Sluggish at Grand Canyon William E. Schmidt New York Times Service South Rim of the Grand Canyon. But here it is the middle of the summer, and its quiet as a night in March. For Americans vacationing in the West, the Grand Canyon has always been a traditional summer stop. But while official park statistics suggest that the number of visitors is close to what it was last year, almost every other measure of tourist activity in the park is down this season. Hotels and campgrounds that were filled last year by early afternoon are not filling until 9 p.m. or later. GRAND CANYON NATIONAL It is a Saturday night in PARK, Ariz. mid-Juland the signs at the park entrance say the lodges and campgrounds are full. But apart from a bar fight and an arrest for speeding, both of which involved park employees, a ranger named Fred Hemphill is having a slow night. Im not complaining, said Hemphill, a burly ranger who supervises the night patrol on the ADVANCE NOTICE INCOME TAX COURSE LIKE TO WORK WITH PEOPLE? Even at the overlooks, where visitors peer into the great chasm, the usual midsummer traffic jams are not occurring this year. Whatever the sctual state of the economy, it is making people nervous and worried, said Dr. Kenneth Horn-baca statistical analyst with the National Park Service in Denver. As a result, people are making more conservative travel plans. Rod and Jean Cawkins of Janesville, Wis., are a case in point. This summer the Cawkinses left their big camper van at home and headed west with their two children in a little Pontiac Sunbird pulling a tiny trailer loaded with camping gear and two pup tents. It costs so much to travel we had to plan a little more for this vacation, Cawkins said on a stopover here. But its worth it. W'ith that big van, Id be getting only 10 or 12 miles to the gallon. With this car, I was getting almost 28 miles to the gallon between here and San Diego. According to Dr. Homback, data from the park service so far this year show that the number of visitors coming to the large, rural parks in the West is running barely 1 or 2 percent higher than for the same time last year. But attendance at parks closer to urban or populated areas is up an average of 9 percent, an indication that most vacationers are staying closer to home. Toby Allen, who is the general manager here for Grand Canyon National Park Lodges, a private company that supervises lodge and motel facilities on the parks South Rim, reports a sharp drop this summer in the number of day visitors, the crosscountry travelers who stop here en route to somewhere else. His conclusion is that those staying here this summer made their bookings long ago and are sticking to their plans. With the economy the way it is, we should be fortunate for the business weve got, Allen aid. It is not only Americans who are dropping the Grand Canyon from their itineraries, but also visitors from overseas. This decline in overseas travelers, which has been reported by federal officials and private tour brokers nationwide, is apparently a reflection of international money markets, where the value of the American dollar has increased at the expense of foreign currencies. Although IHC will absorb most of the costs of the expansion, officials of the hospital are seeking $55,000 in contributions from the public through Health the Foundation. This is 2.5 percent of the construction cost. Smedley said if IHC had not purchased the facility, the entire expansion cost would have been the responsibility of Richfield City and Sevier County, its former owners. This money would had to have been raised through additional taxes, he said. Plans call for the expansion to be on both wings and at the front of the hospital. Its hard to figure out, said Gary Sexton, the sales representative for Grand Canyon Helicopters. You can tell just by the traffic and the activity around here that things in general ae not as busy as last year. And were seeing a lot fewer foreign visitors. Still, our overall business is up. If there are fewer people crowding the footpaths and craggy points at the rim of the canyon this summer, it might be because the park itself has changed, adding diversions and entertainments. Though some might say such things have no place in a park celebrating Americas most spectacular scenic wonder, television sets have been installed over the winter in many of the lodging rooms on the South Rim. k, P The Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, August 8, 1982 Since 1315 Bw Stli Southi 1100 364-554- 4 We |
