Show 8 VV The Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, March 14, 1982 Ann Landers The Dreamer returns to reality you for sure which of the three guys is the father. Its a girl and she looks like me. Mom said I could live at home, but Id have to take care of the kid myself. (She works and I have two younger sisters.) So here I am, not 17 yet and stuck in the house with a baby. She was a colicky brat and cried for five months straight. I thought Id lose my mind. I dont think babies are so cute any more. They are live people a big and can put you responsibility through hell. Please print this letter. I wish someone had explained my head to me when I was 15 and couldnt see any farther than my nose. Ill be watching The Dream Became A the paper. Nightmare In Michigan Dear Michigan: Thank you for telling a different kind of story. For you girls out there who see a little bit of yourself in The Dreamers letter, clip it out and look at it when your fantasies begin to take over. Dear Ann Landers: Some people who read this letter are going to think 1 am some kind of a nut, but I am no nut, and there are plenty , of teen-ag- e girls who think like I. j Seeing this letter f in print might get them off the kick I was on. So many adults have the idea that if teen-ageknew more about rs birth control there wouldnt be so many un- wanted pregnancies. This may be true for some, but not all. I always loved babies thought they were so cute. When I was 13 1 was taking my favorite doll to bed at night, pretending she was my own baby. I started to date at 14. By age 15 1 was into sex pretty heavy with three different guys. I actually didnt enjoy sex all that much, but I liked the idea of being real close to a male person. My dad wasnt around home a lot and I dont remember him ever hugging or kissing any of us kids. None of the guys I was sleeping with used any protection. They told me I was supposed to take care of that. I said I knew all about it and I did. But, deep down, I was dying to have a baby something that was really my own. The family pet was my cousin, who was 28. She had a terrific husband and I knew they had been trying to have a baby for three years. I kept thinking, Ill bet thats one thing I can do that Lois cant. So I went ahead and got pregnant. If my life depended on it, I couldnt tell Dear Ann Landers: You have printed several letters about telephone manners. I hope you will find room for one more. I hate conversations that go like this : I place a call to Mr. Jones, a business executive. His secretary answers, Mr. Jones office. I say, Id like to speak with Mr. Jones. His secretary asks, May I have your name and tell Mr. Jones what the call is about? What business is it of hers what my name is and why I am calling? Perhaps the matter is personal between me and Mr. Jones and he would be darned upset if I gave her the information she asked for. Please print this lesson in etiquette for some of those super-efficie- nt e Bums. retaries. Dear Miss Burns: The person sec- presumptuous. If you and Mr. Jones have something going, he should phone who YOU. Third-Degre- placed the call should identify herself or himself immediately. To expect a busy person to return a blind call is Dear Ann Landers : My husband and I cannot resolve a problem. We are asking you to help. Several months ago we borrowed some valuable items from a couple with whom we were very friendly. Since that time we have had a major falling-ou- t. My husband and I both feel they owe us an apology. Several days ago they telephoned but flatly refused to apologize. All they wanted to talk about was when are we going to return their property? After three such conversations, my husband decided not to return a darned thing until they apologized. They, on the other hand, say, We will consider an apology after you return our property." My husband stubbornly insists we have the right to keep their articles until his conditions are met. I do not share his views. What do YOU think, He has agreed to abide by Midstream In The whatever you say. Midwest. Dear Mid: You do not indicate the nature of the insult which you both feel demands an apology. And it really has no bearing on Hie case. Your husband should return the borrowed items immediately. He has no right to keep them. Ann? Times News Service NEW YORK More and more, owners of mobile or manufactured homes around the country are enjoying such amenities as fireplaces, saunas, y cathedral ceilings, sunken tubs, equipment, swimming pools and nearby golf courses. Compared with conventional housing, mobile homes have a low purchase price. And they are appreciating in value, according to many bankers, allowing for better financing arrangements. Further, they are becoming safer, more solid and more solar-energ- attractive. Many industry officials envision townhouse complexes and high-ris- e buildings constructed from factory-mad- e modules. They contend that manufactured homes will save the fading American dream of home ownership. Mike McCarthy, owner of the Maplewood Estates park in Omaha, said: Its no longer a place for people who cant afford decent housing. It is decent housing. Not So Sure Others are not so sure, however. Among these are the Housing Assistance Council, a Washington-baserural housing organization, and the Center for Auto Safety, the former Ralph Nader affiliate. So far, the Housing Assistance Council said, there have been no rigorous studies comparing mobile home construction standards with those for conventional homes in terms of safety and structural durability. d The council wants the federal government to undertake such a survey. If mobile homes are then found to be as safe and durable as conventional ones, the council says, they would constitute a reasonable housing resource. potential low-coClarence M. Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, said the organization began studying manufactured homes in the early 1970s, when they were a bit more mobile than they are today. Its inquiry found a number of deficiencies. The investigation led to the enactment of a federal code designed to upgrade the quality of the homes. Problems Remain Several problems remain, according to Ditlow. The center wants improvements in the standards for in mobile homes, more federal n methods and a ban on regulation of particle board, which can release dangerous amounts of formaldehyde into a home. Moreover, Ditlow said, general construction defects that drive consumers batty are often present. Barbara Bezdek, a lawyer who heads the centers mobile home task force, contended that from 40 to 45 percent of the owners of mobile homes experience such technical problems with their homes as leaky roofs, electrical and plumbing deficiencies and crooked walls. This place is an oven in the summer, Leroy Knigge of Boise, Idaho, said of his mobile home. The floor shakes when the clothes dryer is running, and you can open the doors with a screwdriver. Lets face it, he added, trailers are cheap. st If I had a choice, Id like to live in a house, said Elsie Kaufman, who lives in a Colorado Springs mobile home park. But I cant afford one. This isnt like a home. There are a lot of restrictions I cant plant flowers or a garden outside without permission. Mobile homes, like cars and other consumer products, have varying degrees of quality, said Guy Tuttle, also of Colorado Springs. The more you pay for them, the better the quality. j A report released in May by the Department of Commerce and the Department of Housing and Urban Development said that the median price for new single family houses climbed to a record $69,300 in April. In contrast, according to the Manufactured , Housing Institute, a national trade association, the average price of a new mobile home last year was , $18,500. Industry statistics show that couples under the age of 40 account for half of all purchases of manufactured homes, with the greatest number of sales in Florida, Texas and California. . People used to think they were for gypsies. That mobile home parks were always next to the dump or , the railroad tracks, said Don Rock of Bellevue, Neb., who has sold mobile homes for 28 years. Now, I parks are going into better areas. As a lifestyle, mobile home living is becoming better and better accepted, agreed Wayne Wetzel, who owns one of the largest mobile home dealerships in Clearwater, Fla. Standards are higher in such t areas as construction and insulation. People are demanding better and they are getting it.
