Sunday, March Schools Gird for Big Enrollments By Ed Rogers JP nnp.n,t Tribune Correspondent ST. GEORGE The Washington County School District administration is preparing for an influx of students that could fill the present facilities beyond capacity within four years. Superintendent Jack Burr said that a study committee recently presented a report to the school board which contained five recommendations. The 15 member committee was composed of teachers and administrators, a school board member and parents and townspeople from the St. George and Hurricane areas. Growth in the school district the last four years has been over 30 percent with a like increase anticipated by about 1985. Eight Alternatives The study, over a period, considered eight alternatives; namely double school sessions, an extended day program, year round schools, utilizing community resources, increasing teacher class loads and building more classrooms and buildings as funds become available, using portable classrooms and busing. As part of their initial study the committee listed five top recommendations. It advocated building more classrooms as the first choice and as second, going into a modified middle school concept. Rather than have all of the 6th grade students in all areas move into the middle school, along with the 7th and 8th graders, only those that come from d elementary schools would become part of the middle school. The committee deemed it very important to not have empty classrooms in some of the schools while others are overcrowded. The committees third suggestion was to go with an extended day program for the middle school, where the greatest crowding is anticipated. Expand System The traditional seven period day system would be expanded to 10 periods each day. However, students would be able to take just 7 classes, which Superintendent Burr indicated would add about 15 percent greater use of the existing facilities. The fourth committee recommendation was to continue to use other community resources, such as the Dixie College where over 160 students are presently enrolled in vocational programs, and to study ways other community involvement could help offset anticipated growth. The superintendent said that perhaps the present work study program could be expanded to allow additional students to receive individual on the job training with businesses around the county. - The final committee suggestion involved the year 'round school concept, only when the other four suggestions have been tried and found to not satisfy the experienced growth. Organize Panel School officials said that a committee will be organized this summer to come up with an extended year plan to meet our unique needs in Washington County. officials have been using the Jefferson . bocal Fillings' Crowns Mushroom & Onion MEDICAID & INS. The calendar year would be broken into six blocks of time, on a schedule, with students attending school for four blocks of time and having vacation for the other two blocks. It would be a necessity," Superintendent Burr indicated to keep all 2 grades on the same six block program so families wouldn't become split and divided, with some family members in school, while others are on vacation. School administrators have listed the advantages of such a six block arrangement: Students and teachers would be allowed more flexibility with two vacation times. If a family prefers a skiing holiday, the childrens vacations could be arranged with that in mind, or they could stay with the traditional summertime vacation. Another advantage is if students need added academic instruction in a given area, they could spend one block of their vacation time in classes to alleviate the problem area. ' Superintendent Burr said that it is conceivable that students could enroll for all six blocks for each of two school years and graduate one year early so as tq continue their education at the post secondary level.
