The federal judge, one of three assigned to a class-actiosuit seeking to eliminate overcrowding in the Dade County Jail, decided to see for himself what life is like there n The prisoners w ere only too happy to tell him. As Hoeveler walked through the jail, which housed 1.208 inmates Friday, a third too many according to an population cup imposed in 1977 by a judge, word of his presence traveled fast. e One inmate insisted, "I was entrapped." The judge just smiled. Others jumped atop tables, shouting their verdict on prison life: "Itsbad! It'sbad!" During his tour, Hoeveler sloshed through puddles from faulty air conditioners, dodged dangling wires, and talked with jail officials about the inmate population. But in the end, he kept his opinions to himself, promising to issue comments from the bench within 10 days. "The government was perfectly willing to fund my way over there." Sen. Hatch said, "and I could have used federal government funds, but my personal choice was to not go at taxpayers me to follow up on the Sen. Vesco matter. Hatch added. "Now 1 may change my attitude about that in the future, because it's very difficult to raise the private funds ex- pense, even though this was a direction by the Judiciary Committee to Dennis DeConcini and to make necessary foreign trips."
