He decided to limit public appearances to speeches on behalf of labor organizations. During his travels, Haywood visited Haymarket Square in Chicago, site of a labor-relate- d tombing in 1886. Ten people, including eight officers, were killed and eight labor none of whom were leaders were present at the incident arrested. Four of them were sentenced to death and hanged. "1 recall the feeling 'of revulsion that filled me when I looked at this symbol of working class oppreshe wrote in his autobiogsion, raphy. "I burst into tears. Although union strength and activity had escalated during Haywoods life, so had the power of opposing forces. During the appeal, he was released from federal prison on bail. It was then, his health failing, that Haywood decided to seek refuge in Russia. His decision was partly based on a feeling that the appeal would be turned down in light of an explosion on Wall Street in 1919 that killed 29 people and injured 200. Authorities blamed the socialists and Haywood was once again a wanted man. On July 29, 1919, Haywood fled to Russia, where he continued his work on a limited basis. He died and was cremated there in 1928 and half his ashes were placed under the Kremlin Wall in Red Square. The remainder were laid to rest near the men with whom he felt so much kinship, the victims of Haymarket Square. Ms. Larsen notes that a persons reactions to unemployment are usually amplified versions of how that person will react to stress on the job. Dr. Brown adds that a person cannot expect to function under stress as if nothing were wrong.
