Show 6U The Salt Lake Tribune. Sunday. March 14, 1982 Embroidering your wedding gown , By Erica Wilson DEAR MS. WILSON : Im in the midst of planning a forthcoming wedding. Ive been considering sewing a fnlly lace or satin wedding dress, and I would like to add embroidery to it Could you suggest a simple stitch that I could add to the two front panels, neckline, cuffs and train edge? Also, how can I transfer the design onto the delicate fabric without hurting the material? I would appreciate any advice, as wedHelen E. dings do cost! Adams, Petoskey, Mich. DEAR MRS. ADAMS: Yes weddings DO cost! Perhaps that's one reason for way. .Also, the gown will be an heirloom someday, with all your own handmade touches. Many Patterns Available There is a wide variety of beautiful patterns available today. One example is Vogue pattern No. 2K64, which is a lovely, romantic, design. Before cutting out your dress, take the paper patterns and lay them m position on the fabnc. Baste around the outlines of the pattern with contrasting cotton thread. This leaves you free to cut a rectangle around each piece of the pattern, if you have sufficient material If you dont, you can cut a large rectangle and put several pattern pieces on it. Fabric Will Stretch that beautiful Indian stitching with, mirrors fragments of sparkle laid down around the neckline and cuffs with white cotton floss. Or you could applique large medallions of machine-mad- e lace, then cut away the fabric from effect. Or the reverse side for a romantic, open-wor- k how about doing white crewel embroidery on the satin background, incorporating some white floss and real gold threads? Another Possibility the laying down of threads on top of Couching is another possibility. You could use the fabnc white silk cords or Camelot, a synthetic that has a silky thread twisted with golden metal, making it very easy to use. To couch Camelot in a circle, take some fine waxed silk of cotton thread (from the store) and sew down two threads of gold side by side at regular intervals. Designs can be random or in straight lines as edgings or fillings. Certainly you cant forget something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Something old could be some seed pearl flowers youve taken from your mothers 1940s hat and appliqued to the cuffs of your dress; something new can, of course, be the dress itself; something borrowed could be a dear friends lace handkerchief youve sewn onto the bodice (later, you can beg her not to borrow it back), and something blue could be in nice blue cotton floss a fine trail of forget-me-nodancing around the hem of your dress. If youd rather the blue appeared somewhere a little less obvious, you could always slip on the traditional blue garter and do the embroidered flowers in your gown in white lilies of the valley, snow drops or jasmine, realistic or stylized. nt Ms. Wilson the trend toward the meadow wedding, and why more bndes want a hand in the making of their own dresses d costumes has Avoiding the many advantages; it adds a very personal touch to a very personal occasion, and youll have an opportuniy fabric and materials ty to choose because youll have saved so many dollars along the mass-produce- high-qualit- If you cut each of the pattern shapes out exactly and THEN embroider them, the fabnc will stretch on the curved or diagonal lines, and you may find you cant fit the sleeve into the armhole properly, for instance. But you can easily stretch the square or diagonal pieces of fabnc in a frame, stitch them, and then cut them out cleanly and precisely afterward. As far as the embroidery goes, you may decide to do it in white, although these days an bridal gown isnt essential. For the best of Santa Fe dressing By Jennifer Anderson Do you know the way to Santa Fe? Thats an important question this spnng because thats the direction fashion and beauty looks are heading. But you dont have to set foot in the artistic, adobe enclave of Santa Fe to get the drift of Southwestern style its as old as the hills, covered wagons and log cabins. Santa Fe dressing begins with a sheer white cotton dress, with greatgrandmother touches of pleated shoulders, puffed sleeves and gathered ruffled skirts. Now, a second skirt is often worn over the top. This one is usually made of heavy duty, denim or umber-tone- d striped canvas. The ruffles on the skirt peek out, petticoat style. Good, tough country boots with stout cow pre-stress- boy heels complete the picture. Accessories give the Santa Fe Look the authenticity of the Southwest, and its sandstone and high desert. The most important touch is the concho belt of engraved silver medallions artfully threaded on leather belts. If they are adorned with touches of turquoise, they are collectors items with high price tags. Good Copies However, most specialty shops carry inexpeng sive, copies. Santa Fe jewelry has a rustic look too. Its heavy and bold. Earrings are traditionally giant gold hoops, sometimes dangling drops of ivory and beads. This is a bonanza fashion look for the woman who likes to keep The entire look is homemade and can easily be accomplished m a few evenings of gathering, seaming and bead stringing. Give Up Rigidity My special interest is always the beauty look to look hair is multi- layered cut. When worn straight, it arranges it- self in fringes; when curled, it puffs up full blown. The addition of braided, beaded or cotton head-band- s forms the hair into fullness on the crown with a narrow look through the temples. Skin, too, enjoys the freedom of being natural, colored by gels and bronzing creams. They give a tanned look without a trace of the pore clogging heaviness of foundation bases. This look is not confined to those with youthful, unlined skin. A artist friend adopted this look many years before it caught on generally. Heres how she keeps her skin dewy and all year long this way. She takes good care of her skin with regular cleansing and nightly creaming. Daytimes she wears a foundation base under the eyes and dots the base on discolorations and shadow lines that run from the nose to the comers of the mouth. Once completed, she applies a moisture cream with a bit of tan blusher, mixed in the palm of her hand, and smooths it over her whole face. When her skin feels a bit dry, she freshens up with a touch of dewy moisturizer which leaves her skin moist and shiny. tan-tinte- d Oul dCrrftr ShoVcaso TIncJ RftQ-159- All 3 Piece Now...
