Stark E-- Tribune Garden Consultant E-4- SEPTEMBER is a good month to plant peonies because it is best for the plants and because the gardener is filled full with fall ambition after a hot, lazy MirnnuT. Locate the plants in full sun, away from shade soil and competing tree and shrub roots, in where they may remain undisturbed for years. Peonies do not like to be moved, requiring two to four years after planting to develop satisfactory bloom. Crowns with three to five eyes (buds) and two or three strong roots are preferable for planting. Many peonies fail to bloom because they are planted too deeply. The eyes should be no deeper than two inches below the soil surface when the planting hole is fil.ed. d moved without dividing, will often diseaiu fail to bloom. When dividing established plants the older portions of the crown. There are many other reasons why peonies fail to bloom including too much shade, root competition from adjacent plants, plants are too young, injury to the ri)0,s by grubs, wireworms or some other insects or animals or decay, weak plants from lack of fertilizer where buds soi develop but donut open, too much nitrogen fertilizer, AN OLD T, too wet or too dry, hot wealher, thrip damage to buds, deep cultivation that cuts roots, and some others. Dont worry about honey dew and ants on buds, these do not impede bloom. IN SPITE OF ALL these possibilities for bloom failure most gardeners find peonies very easy to grow with no unusual care or pest control measures. Sometimes the plants do not come into full bloom for Decoration Day but lilacs, iris, doronicum and many other flowers are usually ready and willing to substitute for this occasion Selecting an early flowering variety of bloom by decoration day. peonies may also prov ide sure of peony is highly varieties most of Foliage ornamental. Cut the spent flow ers as they begin to fade to enhance the appearance of the plant the rest of the summer until clipped off at ground level in late autumn. A complete plant food broadcast over the soil now or early spring, at the rate suggested for lawns or other flowers, and tilled in only a couple of inches deep should supply ample nutrition for peony plants. Don't overdo it just because you can afford more fertilizer. Go asy with straight nitrogen fertilizer; it produces big plants with fewer flowers and unhappy gardeners. m -- C-- 2, C-- C-- C-- C-- 2 provement, advice from the garden doctor 1 Ed- C-- C-- Taylorsville Taylorsville 5, 7 and 22 Wards, honorable mention, Class 3; Financial C-- ward and Alveretta Hunt, 1st Minetta place, Class Hunt, special award; Class Harold and Myrtle Sing leton, honorable mention.
