Cancer Patients Feeling At Home in Facility ; i By Angelyn Nelson Tribune Medical Editor Some cancer patients have found a home away from home. In a program started two and a half years ago, patients undergoing radiation therapy live in hospital-owne- d houses at low rates during their treatment. Dr. Henry P. Plenk, radiation center director, started the program after he realized outpatients accounted for 96 percent of the centers patients, and many of those came from f High Motel Bills The radiation outpatients, whose treatments usually last five or six weeks, often faced staggering motel bills plus transportation costs. Some patients ended up spending more money living than on the radiation, pointed out Virginia medical social worker who helps run the program. When a patient comes here, Miss Conkling continued, a lot of anxiety could be heightened by having to find a place to stay and someplace to eat. The patients live in two houses on the Con-klin- Routing Change Asked - g, e a Avenues located within walking distance of the hospital. They are charged $5 daily or $35 weekly to cover linen and housekeeping expenses. Kitchen Privileges Besides their rooms, the patients have kitchen privileges and use of the rest of the house and yard. For those who dont want to cook thev can receive the employes 30 percent discount at the hospital cafeteria. Instead of being cooped up in a motel room, this living arrangement offers the patients something to do after treatment. Some like to work In the yard, while others watch television or play the piano. And, as space allows, the patients can also have family members stay with them. Dr. Plenk said an added dimension to this living arrangement is the support that the patients give each other. It alleviates the fears of new patients to be able to talk to and see other patients who have progressed in the treatment to various stages, he Now 1 T995 Orlg. 219.95 (pf. 7) stereo comJCPenney ponent system with AMFM radio and phonograph.
