THERE seems to be as many books on automobiles, how they work and how to fix them as there are cars on the road. Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority are about as interesting to read as the Manhattan telephone book. V BEATS Inevitably, they all contain a wealth of useable information. One of the big problems, however, is maintaining interest long enough to glean it. Additionally, many provide data that would be of benefit only to an engineer. Three books that I have read lately seem to get a wealth of information across in the easiest possible way. Most expensive of the lot at $9.95 is a hardcover missive published by Bobbs-Merriof Indianapolis and New York. Written by Patty A Woman and de Roulf, Her Car seems to be The author and pub ll mis-title- d. lisher obviously are trying to attract the female audience and, since that seems to exclude mailes, it is a shame. The book is well written, entertaining and informative. THE AUTHOR is writing to the rank amateur which are and, most despite the chauvinist protests, that includes men. She covers, in laymens terms, everything from what kind of car you need to know about and when to get rid of car-owne- it. Less expensive at $5.95 is Bob Fendells The New Era Car Book and Auto Survival Guide, published by Holt I Rinehart and , Winston New York. r Fendell, a veteran arnF knowledgeable automotive journalist, touches on everc phase of buying, owning an selling a car. But his strong point is in the buy ing The third book is a $29' Doubleday softcover entitled Simple Auto Repair, b Dick OKane.
