Has stardom come to cast of Chorus Line ? Not yet By William A. Raidy Newhouse News Writer NEW YORK Thomas J. Walsh from Auburn, N.Y., was enjoying the glones of Romes tounst and tradition-fille- Via Sistina recently when he spotted a young man wearing a T shirt with the legend A Chorus Line and the faces of the people in that e hit musical emblazoned across It. Thommie ran over to the young man in question and said: Did you When see the show? there was a curt affirmative reply, he added, carefully removing his Did you sunglasses: The reply: like it? Yeah." Well, maybe you remember me Im that one in the show, said Thommie, on a vacation for two weeks from one of the biggest musical attractions in the histnry of show business, pointing to one of the figures on the shirt There was a moment of silence and the lad said: I guess so. Thommie Walsh, whose very life story, as well as so much of his professional energy is in A Chorus Line, said be got back on his tounst. bus a little let down. Tribute to Gypsies Walsh is one of the remaining four principals who started out in Michael Bennetts musical tribute to the, the chorus "Gypsies dancers who are still in the New York company. Most of the rest have departed for the West Coast to appear in the Los Angeles version or are seeking success in other fields of entertainment. While the show has yet to mark its first official birthday on Broadway, the original members recall that the all-tim- ensemble itself has the true fitar, has helped his career greatly. First came Michael Bennetts conception of a musical based on the people who really make the show, the "kids in the chorus, who go on from one season to another providing its guts, stamina and precision. Wayne Glento, another of the originals still hoofing away at the Shubert Theatre, recalls telling creator-directBennett about the frustrations of auditioning for a chorus job, which is essentially the musicals "plot. He You told Bennett: dance two hours, then you sing. Then they line thats the worst you up thing. You cant Imagine what the director is looking for. They shuffle you around and you stand there for like an hour. It Is really tedious and you dont know what they are thinking. Dancing Partner Cilcnto, who maried his high school dancing partner, like most of the veterans, is not disappointed that immediate stardom hasn't come his way. He, like the rest, never expected it and "besides thats not why were all into it. Wayne, who has bought a new house in Mamaroneck, N.Y., mostly on his steady "Chorus Line salary, has made television commercials for a soft drink company and teaches classes in jazz ballet. "A lot of doors have opened for me since Chorus Line," he says. When I tried to see an agent to audition for a TV commercial in the old days, I couldnt get in. Now when I call up and I say: Im Wayne Cllento from A Chorus Line, they know who I am. one of tile reasons Thats from first workshop which this unique show why I didnt go to Califorcomemerged began with tape nia with the other fact the and That two than more pany. sessions I ere years ago. Im not interested to becoming a star, incidentally. All that is behind me. I want to get back to my painting and designing. All four of the "survivors are receiv- of ing ooe percent of the shows profits, which represents a piece of Michael Bennetts share to writers royalties he has assigned to original cast members. This sounds miniscule until one realizes the show's profits are already in toe millions. Whatever the cash, all agree toe experience of being part of this extraordinary musical has been the biggest reward. Being in the mopt strenuous musical in Broadways history hasnt been easy, either. As Thommie Walsh put it: "When we have our 20th reunion, we kid about how well all be sitting down by then. As a health system, according to Parkinson, Tal Chi keeps the body supple and aids to the smooth and even flow of the Chi (or breath energy.) As a dance form, Tai Chi develops grace, fluidity, balance, coordination and rhythm. The classes will meet Tuesdays at p.m. Creative dance classes for adults are available Monday and Wednesday evenings and Friday mornings.
