Fifty-on- e sail years on, Buccaneers, is the theme of the annual Cyprus high Song n Yell, which will be held here at 10:30 Wednesday morning. Student body officers, class officers and cheerleaders have been conducting practice sessions in preparation for the spirit event, which is the 51st presentation since Ann Pehrson, then a teacher at Cyprus, initiated the competition as a way to build school spirit. Students have been preparing props for the event. Cheerleaders will use various props to illustrate their class cheers and songs as they lead class members, explained assistant principal Scott Whipple. Song n Yell has always been a really important tradition at Cyprus and has done a lot to increase school spirit and to involve the communihe said. However, particity, pation has dropped in recent years and there have been some complaints about that and about time taken from classes by students who are not participating in the program. Unless student participation in both practice sessions and the per formance is up to at least 75 percent this year, the program may be cancelled next year, Whipple stressed. The program is open to the public and student leaders from many schools throughout the area, including Granite, Jordan and Salt Lake districts are expected to attend, he said. The community is also invited. Traditionally, the event draws quite a crowd, Whipple said. Judges are drawn from outside the school and class presentations are In judged on participation, in both practice sessions and performance, as well as on enthusiasm and on originality. Advisers involved with the production are Susan Cramblitt, seniors; Pat Bullough, juniors and Jane Wong, sophomores. We hope our students will become involved this year and enable us to continue this old, and Mr. Whipple popular, tradition, commented. KEARNS.
