Show 2 Thursday, Nov. WEST VALLEY VIEW . 17, 1983 'Ugly' Field Goal Lifts Judge To Victory - Bulldogs To Battle Beetdiggers In Friday Finale SALT LAKE. Big plays on defense and the ugliest field goal I've ever seen propelled Judge Memorial into the 3A championship game tomorrow (Friday). The Bulldogs, on the strength of a field goal by wobbly sophomore Kelly Terrill, described as ugly by his coach and teammates, Thursdefeated Pleasant Grove day to set up a rematch of the 1981 state final featuring the Bulldogs and Jordan. In that one, the Bulldogs 3 emerged with a victory. Kickoff tomorrow is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Rice Stadium. There are those who are suggesting that the unbeaten Beetdiggers may get revenge for that. Already this year Jordan has defeated Judge 34-While Bulldog fans are taking great pride in the trip to the finals and are patting Coach Frank LEtoile and his charges on the back and saying, great season, he just isn't buying it. "Sure were an underdog, but were not going up there planning to lose, LEtoile said at midweek. He also said he is getting a little tired of hearing about how it has been Jordans goal all season long to win the state title. "Thats our goal every year, he growled. And Judge has won more than would be considered its fair share. Expounding on tomorrows game, LEtoile noted that his team has a different look than it did when Jorskid dan started it on a three-gam- e in early October. Several Bulldogs were injured and the contest did not get out of hand until the fourth period. Its safe to say we learned some things from that game, the Judge mentor added. It may turn out that we do lose, but were simply not going to con- cede anything until the final gun sounds. He called the victory over Plea- sant Grove a scrappy team effort. Judge had to overcome three tur- novers, doing it by causing four PG Judge 11, then punted the Vikings in- to a hole of their own. When Matt Burkley recovered a fumbled pitch off the Viking option game at the PG 34, the Bulldogs were in business, Cordova overcame a sack to toss a pass to Marty Biljanic who tumbled out of bounds at the one on miscues, two of which led directly to the scoring. Junior quarterback Tony Cordova may be one of the keys to the Bulldog turnaround - part of it with his defensive play. He killed the first real drive of the game in the first period with an interception at the -- . the final play of the first period. The first play of the second quarter was a scoring toss to Scott Oppocher, who was all alone in the end zone when the Vikings played for the run. There was a groan from the Bulldog faithful when Terrills kick was wide of the mark. That seemed to inspire the Vikings who ran their veer - the same game the Beetdiggers excel at - to perfection and less than four minutes later, the Vikings scored on an Eric Thomas keeper from the seven. A successful conversion put the Utah County squad on top After that it was largely defense. Late in the first half when Shaun Storey picked off a Cordova pass at the 31, it looked as though PG would pad its lead, but on fourth and one, Joe Colosimo stuffed the ball carrier in the backfield and that kept the Bulldogs close. The key play for Judge was Danny Auers recovery of a fumbled punt at the 18 late in the third period. A halfback pass aimed at Mike Liston that appeared to be good for a score was intercepted, but Liston had been interfered with and that gave Judge new life at the nine. When the Bulldogs couldnt punch it in, Terrill was only too happy to make up for the missed PAT. The field goal wasnt pretty. LEtoile called it the ugliest three-pointhes ever seen. It was a low, wobbler, but it cleared the bar and ultimately proved to be the It came on the second play of the fourth period. That meant Judge had some defense to play. But if there was ever a time the offense needed to produce, it was when the Vikes downed a punt at the Judge six. Finding something they could deal with in the Viking defensive line, the Bulldogs sent John McCormick right up the middle, time after time. -- 9-- 7 -- ""V" 52-1- T- .Trr -- I'H -- mmm y- -r game-winne- WMWfSWWiti WANTED: fc:t football team to beat H.S. Biljanic donned the hero cloak with an interception at the 14 and McCormick worked his magic again, driving to the Pleasant Grove 25 and, more importantly, eating the clock. The Vikes would have one more crack when Judge fumbled again, but four plays, including an attempt to sucker the defense with a purposefully-fumble- d lateral, went nowhere and the game was over. Pandemonium broke out among the huge Judge throng which had marched en masse to Rice Stadium from the school, chanting, We aint dead yet. e McCormicks heroics gave him 88 yards on 13 carries, while Paul Barbiero totaled 70 tough yards on 10. Through the air, Judge had 52 yards on 5x13 pass completions. Defensively, the game may have been won in the PG backfield where the Viking signal caller was sacked five times. Colosimo was responsible for three of those and had 14 tackles. Player of the week honors went to McCormick on offense, Colosimo on defense, Oppocher and Murphy for line play and Biljanic was back of the week. A 3A 11:30 A.M.
