ECRI is a total language arts program that is so effective I am amazed and thrilled with the results in my first grade class. LaRue Richmond, teacher at Whittier elementary, was expressing the view of her fellow teachers and principal Richard Jordan as she discussed the ECRI program, now in its second year at Whittier. The basic philosophy of ECRI ( Exemplary Center for Reading Instruction) is that all children can learn, given quality instruction and sufficient practice, said Mr. Jordan. Quality instruction is critical if mastery learning is to take place, he said, and mastery is vital. With mastery, students develop confidence that shows in their faces. The principles used in the program include mastery, with each child given his own time to attain the goal. Some can learn a new word with very little practice, while others may require more, explains Maurine Winterton of the ECRI staff. The initial learning is the hardest, once the student learns how to learn, he requires fewer practices to pass the tests, she explained. Another principle in the program is overt response, which teachers work to achieve with every child. Instructional responsibility demands that teachers teach rather than offer learning centers in which students are expected to discover things themselves. Positive reinforcement is the human element, without which no teaching can be effective. Rate is another factor used in the program, with students taught to read fluently and with meaning. Writing and other skills are increased at the same time. ECRI is an individualized program using group instruction. Students are placed in skills groups, following an informal reading inventory. Each proceeds as rapidly as he can, Mrs. Winterton said. The majority of children entering kindergarten are ready for academic instruction. With the techniques of this program, they can be taught the total program of language arts. Penmanship has never been so good, they are shown such basics as holding the pencil correctly and correct formation of each letter. Nothing is left to chance, said teacher Joan Kimball. I will use ECRI techniques in my teaching whether I teach a different grade or move to another school. I use it in every subject I teach and believe it can be used in every grade level, said Fran Chamberlin. This Senior Slate Is Full In Magna MAGNA. Next week will be busy for participants in Magna Senior Citizen Center activities, beginning with a trip to the 10th East Senior Center Monday. Pat Nageli, director, said it will cost 50 cents per person for transportation and $1 for lunch. The group will play bingo in the afternoon. Mrs. Nageli said the center will be closed on Nov. 24 for Thanksgiving, but on the 25th, Hal Christenson, country and western singer, will entertain. A bus will come to seniors homes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the next six weeks and bingo will be played on all three days instead of only on Wednesday and Friday. The daily menu next week will be Hungarian meat balls, Monday; tuna noodle casserole, Tuesday; chili, Wednesday; macaroni and cheese with frankfurters, Friday. For further information about any of the above activities or to make reservations for the meals those interested may call the center, program has given me the tools to make sure every child can learn to read, she added. Laurie Connor, first grade teacher, agreed. I like the way reading is integrated with the rest of the language arts. The vocabulary words are also the spelling words. Paragraphs used to teach study skills, grammar and comprehension are words the student has been taught, so he gets extra practice in reading them, she remarked. I like the way it pulls reading, spelling, grammar and writing together. I love the penmanship and was impressed with how much the children maintained from kindergarten into first grade, noted Kathy O'Toole. I like ECRI because the program is designed to involve all the students, it leaves few moments for observed fifth grade boredom, teacher Dallon Dennison. I feel the program has helped me become a better teacher and individual, remarked second grade teacher Claudia Larsen. I am more positive with the children and they respond much more quickly with a positive comment," she added. Carol Gilliam, second grade teacher, listed five advantages she found in the program: students are more involved and able to evaluate their own progress; better pen just language arts together, it manship; more and better creative writing is produced; children can develop better decoding skills and read more words, children become better at critical judgment and selfcorrection. Throughout the teachers comments the word positive seems to be a cohesive agent, tying their observations together, the principal remarked. The positive influence of the ECRI program ties more than NOVEMBER & ross-I.itc- s says; To grow in the Lord: Feed on the word, rest in the Lord, exercise yourself into Godliness."
