THE PROBLEM began COUNTY when I said out loud one day that I think horoscopes are as silly as soap operas. I suspect the same people who read their daily horoscope also reserve from ten oclock in the morning until two in the afternoon every day to watch the suffering on The Turning World and Mollys Misery. Someone up there heard me. The next time I read my horoscope, which was exactly a week and three days after the above recounted conversation, there it was in newsprint. Watch out, you Scorpio. Boy, are you going to get it. I ALREADY knew I didnt want to find out what is going to happen to me. I find it hard enough to cope with today, and if I had forseen it when it was still my future, I would have done everything in my power to prevent it becoming the present. As a matter of fact, I have lived long enough that I do not need the moon or the stars to tel! me what is going to happen this afternoon or tomorrow or next week. This afternoon I am going to go out and get into my automobile intending to drive out to see Aunt Martha. Automobile, which was hale and hearty when I tucked it into the garage only hours earlier, will make ominous noises. It will not purr, it will snarl. E Different Diets For Houseplants By PATRICK DENTON Copley News Service Having recently expounded upon the flamboyant beauties of the amaryllis, whose huge dramatic blooms quite resemble the trumpets of old fashioned graa mophones, 1 thought it was a good time to pass along few items on the subject of houseplants. KEEP receiving glow ing reports on the use of Knox it in early gelatin for houseplants. One lady began using June on her African violets which had not exactly been thriving in her mobile home. w ith blooms, with , they w ere covered By buds still coming and new leaves growing larger than the older ones. A lemon and a date plant also began making progress with the gelatin treatment. I ANOTHER houseplant enthusiast found her spider treatplant and philodendron appreciative of the gelatin unflavored Knox of ment. which is to mix one envelope gelatin with one cup of hot tap water to dissolve. Then slowly add three cups of cold water to make a quart of liquid. The mixture is used once a month as part of your normal watering and feeding program. Yet another indoor gardener warns not to store the gelatin solution for any length of time. Using a gelatin solution that has been stored apparently can cause a bit of a stench, which can be cured with a dose of charcoal in the plant pots. AND SPEAKING of dosing your houseplants with various concoctions, one gardening friend whose husband works for a pharmaceutical company that manufactures oral contraceptives tells me that samples are normally tossed in the garbage. Having rescued some of these, she administered a solution of crushed pills in water to a pepper plant. Within a month blooms began popping out all over the plant which up to that time had just sat still. te Lets Talk t Cabin Fever As the snow and the temperature fall, do you experience an uneasy feeling? After extended periods of time indoors do you become bored and irritable? If so, you may be getting a case of cabin fever. DESPITE MY ridicule of horoscopes, it is amazing how often they come true. Whether due to coincidence or broad interpretation, the fact remains they are often fulfilled. For example, one Monday morning my horoscope said I would "come into a sum of money from an unexpected source. Just that afternoon son Jon handed me a five dollar bill and announced he was repaying a loan. College kids are not the best credit risks in town, so the repayment was certainly unexpected. THEN THE next day horoscope warned me in- stead of adding fools no one." As if I needed to be told that. For someone whos two hundred and forty seven years old as the crow flies, advice about birthdays is as necessary as , more snow this winter. Another thing that bother, me about my horoscope is that everyone elses is more fun than mine. I always seem to get Oregon Short Line Co., 99:013:0006, PUC, Total Tax $19,070.06 promise on the same day? 1 was warned not to expect Rewarding emotional encounters. 1 knew what that meant. It was warning me that Aunt Martha is going to look for the silk flower arrangement I labored over for her birthday present, poke it with a distainful finger and announce it doesnt go with her color scheme, and Im being warned to keep my big mouth shut about her color scheme. TWENTY-ON- Finding Joy In Life By REV. LEE TRUMAN Copley News Service A church school teacher was trying to make the point in class that it was good to make someone else happy. She asked if there were some in the class who felt they had done this the preceding week. ONE LITTLE girl enthusiastically raised her hand and the teacher asked her to tell the class about it. 1 went to see my Aunt Edna, she said, and she was very, very happy when I went home. IN THE SAME way, people struggle and find that elusive ingredient of life, but they go at it from the wrong direction. For many, finding happiness is a frantic, expensive and an unending search, but it always seems to escape their grasp and they cannot find any bit of bliss for themselves. For a number of persons, the answer to finding life joy can be disarmingly simple, but others cannot see anything simple working for them, because they have worked so hard and expended so much trying to capture happiness. LET ME USE Gene Simpson as an example. Gene was a bachelor member of my small mountain parish about 60 miles east of San Diego. Gene was as unhappy a man as you could picture and yet he had a paid-fo- r home, his health was good and he had a good retirement income. Gene had fallen into the habit of getting up each morning with his mind made up that the day would be miserable, the neighbors kids would be monsters and the weather unbearable. When I would come by, he could convince a saint that he would have an awful day. IT TOOK a long time to get Gene turned around, but what a difference it made! Before, he could not stand children, he was now the man who would go out and pick them up in his station wagon for different church activities. Before, all I could get from him was a low growl or maybe a hostile stare , now he would come into my office excited about the morning sunrise or the kindness someone had extended to him. All this took place in turning around what he expected out of the day - from anticipating something bad -- expecting something good. IT WAS a years hard work on both of our parts, but when he began to look for the good, expect the positive, make the effort at the beginning of the day with the decision that the day would be a happy day, it turned Gene's life around. Children have this ability, but many lose it as they grow older. I do not think it is so much the boundless energy of youth or the lack of responsibility which gives them their humor and life joy; rather they simply have their minds made up to enjoy that moment before they even find out what the moment is. A MOTHER shared what her perturbed youngster, dawdling at the dinner table, had asked her. Why did God put all the vitamins in spinach, beets and cod liver oil and none in ice cream and cookies? He had some rather firm convictions about spinach, beets and cod liver oil, but did not let it ruin his whole day. UNHAPPINESS is a state of mind. We are free individuals who have a great deal to say about what our state of mind is going to be for each day. We can choose the positive, or go through life like Gene went through much of his life. We cant help but think that the Psalmist ran into the same problem, and out of his experience had seen people who chose to be happy or unhappy and he wrote, This is the day that the Lord hath made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalms 118:24) PUT THAT sentence on your bathroom mirror, the dashboard of your car or the edge of your desk to remind yourself that for the most part, we choose how we face each day and just what that day will do for us or what it will do to us. I am aware that this is a simple approach to this subject, but I have found that many of the profound things are the simplest, and the simplest things are the most profound. It worked for Gene, and a great number of others since. NOW BEFORE you begin administering The Pill to all your indoor plants and hold me responsible for subsequent unexpected pregnancies resulting from these contraceptives being used for other than their specific purposes, let me add a thought or two. So far as I know, up till now there has been no serious pills on plant study done on the effect of found some have is It fact that a growers plant growth. plants taking a new lease on life with water, and some plants begin growing and flowering like mad after being treated with this particular hormone, but its still all very experimental. So 1 would suggest that if you wish to experiment, by all means do birth-contr- so -- - but with spare pills only! that I have used with good success on is houseplants pasteurized worm castings. But take a tip from me and dont mention to your children just what it is you are feeding your pet indoor plants. Our two thought the introduction of this material to our home was pretty yucky, even for someone like myself who plays with cow manure in the backyard garden. I've found most plants experience a health boost with just a thin layer of worm castings scratched into the soil surface. Its impossible to determine the exact nature of the nutrients involved in this product because as yet there is no standardized feeding program for the worms. And its what they are fed that will determine just how rich in nurtients the castings will be. A PRODUCT WORMS GROWN in manure or compost will produce the richest product. 1 recently purchased a couple more plastic bags of castings from a local nursery whose owner says hes had many good reports of its effect on indoor plantings. Know The Weather What does smoke tell us ab- out the coming weather? Does soot sometimes play the role of weather forecaster? BOTH SMOKE and soot sometimes indicate the nature of approaching weather. Most often they tell of approaching weather. Most often they tell of approaching rain or bad weather. Smoke that curls downward from a smokestack indicates unstable weather, probably rain or even a storm. Soot which falls down a chimney into a fireplace below' indicates a falling barometer, and the approach of rain. SMOKE THAT rises steadily, not necessarily vertically, indicates good weather ahead. Vertical smoke columns reveal a lack of wind, or frontal movement; this sign could mean that no weather change is imminent for a day or so in winter. Through summer, the value of a vertical smoke column as a weather indicator is highly questionable. Your Gland: The Thyroid Bv HVROLD B. L1GON, MD Today, well wind up general discussions about the thyroid and a major endocrinological secreting gland whose main function governs the body's metabolic processes, which we have discussed earlier. PREVIOUS discussions have talked about excessive thyroid activity, insufficient thyroid activity, inflammation of the gland, and goiter. These are four of the five basic disorders of the thyroid gland most often seen by the practicing physician. The fifth disorder is tumor lor neoplasm). As in all systems, neoplasms are classified as beither benign or malignant. non-tox- Fortunately the thyroid nodules most frequently seen are nontoxic nodular adenomas or benign. The malignant cancerous nodules are variously called adenocarcinomas and there are numerous forms. IN ANY form, thyroid nodules are usually discovered by the patient as a neck mass or fullness. The mass is usually sometimes small, and often ignored until growth becomes evident. The problem then becomes one of identifying the type of nodule whether benign or malignant. Physical signs, as above, a history of past thyroid cancer, or past radiation treatment is sometimes significant, and laboratory studies with scanning, help the expert clinician confirm the diagnosis. r, Sports Quiz 1.
