Survey Shows Teachers Spend Money on Supplies By CHERYL ARCHIBALD - Review Correspondent BOUNTIFUL Davis County Elementary teachers surveyed by the South Davis League of Women Voters recently on funding for supplies in the county schools indicated most teachers spend a considerable amount of their own money on classroom supplies. The league has lobbied for an increased severance tax on oil and gas to help fund edu- cation. According the the league, Davis County classloads are the highest in the nation . There were three questions asked on the survey with 449 teachers responding. Results of the survey have been written into a report which will be presented to lawmakers in the next Utah legislative session. The first question was How much money have you personally spent to supplement supplies so far this year? According to the report, the total spent by the teachers was $104,813, which averaged slightly more than $233 for each teacher. Seventy-tw- o teachers spent $400 of their own money or moe. Only 5 percent of the teachers spent nothing. The report quoted one teacher as saying, We always feel we have to cut down our projects or else pay for it out of our own pockets. Next, teachers were asked to evaluate the adequacy of supplies. Twenty-siteachers rated supplies adequate or good. Others rated supplies moderate x or fair. teachers said they Sixty-fiv- e didnt have enough textbooks to teach required subjects. One My room is adequately supplied for 25 students. Unfortunately I have 38 students. Fourteen said some books are 20 years old or older, 25 mentioned a shortage of consumable workbooks, half complained about poor quality of materials, and listed inadequate basic supplies. The contest is sponsored by the schools citizens advisory committee. This is the second year of the contest. Chairwoman of the contest Oayla Titensor presented trophies to the students. She and other citizens judged the entries from students of the school. Students from kindergarten to grade 3 were invited to submit a poster about being good neighbors. The 4th through 6th grades were invited to write essays about ways to be a good neighbor. Winners of the poster contest were Stefanie Gray, first place, and Jeff Ames, second place. More than half said that their job was harder than ever because behavior problems are worse than ever. They said parents dont care whether their children do the work or whether they disrupt the class.
