This is bass water! Iceberg Canyon on lake Powell is one of many canyons filled with brush the . fishing is good whenever youre at Lake Powell, but it is at its absolute best in April and May when the spawning fish run close to shore, and guard their nests ferociously. This is the time pound, and bigger, lunkers are caught. Average bass run about 3 pounds with a daily bag and possession limit of 10. Best bass fishing ranges from Wahweap on the Arizona side of the lake up to Hite, where the lake becomes discolored from the Colorado River. Around river inlets like the San Juan and Escalante fishing is good all year. Other top spots are the Rincon, Iceberg Canyon, and right around marinas at liulldrog. Halls, and Wahweap. And that includes almost anywhere in between Bass hang out around rocky ledges, Hiints, slides and in brush filled bays or pockets. They like a lot of cover in which to hide, surprising their quarry from hidden lairs. Top producer of bass is probably the live waterdog. or salamander. Other best bets are dark colored plastic worms (black, blue and purple), jig flies and varous lures such as the gold or silver Kastmaster, Bass feed heavily on the thin-fi- n shad, and any bright spinner or plug w ill usually fool a bass. Trout fishing is found almost exclusively from Wahweap down to the dam where the water gets down to trout temperatures. Trout love cold water, bass love warm, and the two will seldom ever be caught in the same area. Trolling has produced some huge rainixiws in the pound class. Bait fishing is also very successful near the shoreline from December to March. For the most part, rainbow trout stay ery deep in this warm water, hot weather area. At times the erappie fishing at Lake Powell can be unbelievable. At other times you cant buy one with a hundred bucks. It all depends on being in the right spot at the right time. If you hapixui onto a schxl of erappie youll catch 50 fish in an hour. For the most part, however, it is a little slower than that. The skys the limit on erappie, however, and these little U to IVa pounds! fish make ior goxl filleting and eating. Most consistent producers of crap-piare light colored jig flies, usually white or yellow, and spinners and lures such as the daredevle, Kastmaster, Little tleo, and arious others. The walleye fishery of Lake Powell is almost undetermined. Walley e have not show n up in great numbers yet, they are hard to locate and even harder to catch. Every once in a while, though, some lucky angler hooks onto a couple and everybody gets excited about it again. The Division of Wildlife Resources is anxious to find out more about Lake Powell s walleye, and have encouraged anglers to go after them and rejHirt on success, location, baits used, etc. So tar it appears white and yellow jigs and the smaller spinners and lures generally-usefor erappie have had about us much success with walleye as anything else. all- g White, Navy, Red, Yellow and Orange. The beauty and variety of activities found at this warm water lake and in the surrounding area is unsurpassed anywhere. Fortunately for Utah fishermen, it is also one of the states top fishing waters. It enjoys a national reputation lor its largemouth bass fishing, and is also excellent for erappie and rainbow trout. Gigantic striped bass are also in the lake, although few are being caught as of yet, and shy and reclusive walleye may also provide a valuable fishery in the near future. For an family vacation area Lake Powell can't lie heat. When you tire of hauling in bass and erappie, hikthere's water skiing, all in the fabulous red ing, exploring rocks of color country. And the camping from April to October is terrific. Lake Powell in largely responsible for showing Utah trout fishermen why bass fishing reigns as king around the rest of the country. And now many Utahns are hooked on it Theres just something different about a five pound fighting bucket-moutThere seems to be more savagery in the strike, more brute and as often as strength in the battle not, the bass comes out winner hi its Ixmlder ridden, brush strewn lair. At the most recent meeting of the Utah Wildlife Board, some 45 sportsmen had approximately 190 years of hunting, fishing and guiding privileges taken away for unlawful wildlife activities. That is a lot of years without the recreational opportunities offered by Utahs Individual license revocations varied from one to five years, depending on the nature of the violation. Cases involving the illegal possession of big game animals, mostly those taken out r of season, generally evoked a license revocation. Unlawful fishing activities t pically brought two to three years of privilege suspension. The Wildlife Board is given the responsibility by the Utah legislature to uphold the wildlife laws and regulations of Utah. Given the above statistics trom just one board meeting, the cost of violating wildlife laws should given (very outdoor consumer something to think about. Can a few extra trout be w orth the possible suspension of two or three years of hunting and fishing privileges? Consider, too, that Utah's wildlife law enforcmetit programs hae been steadily increasing in their eff icienc . The chance of the law breaker being caught is becoming greater each year.
