The test then was to see if DES treatment would prevent miscarriages. It did not. DES, a compound derived from coal tar, was used during the 1950s and probably early 1960s to prevent miscarriages. There have been estimates that 500,000 females have been exposed to it. This would suggest as many male offspring also were exposed to DES. Previous studies have shown that DES can cause cancer of the vagina in girls whose mothers took the com pound.
