Show DESERET NEWS. THURSDAY, MAY 13, 1976- - The Salt Lake Tribune, Friday, May 14, 1976 IS If yourre looking for a new fishing experience the this summer, try Utahs high country lakes Uintas, Boulders and Manti Mountain. Oh, its a little more work than driving to the nearest reservoir, or pulling the car up along side some mountain stream. But the reward is spectacular alpine scenery, peace and solitude, thousands of small but crystal clear mountain lakes, and, best of all, plenty of fish. From Kamas on the west to Flaming Gorge on the east, the Uinta Mountain range is over 100 miles long and 40 miles wide.' It ranges in elevation from 9,000 feet to over 13,000. it harbors over 2,000 lakes, many, of which see very few , if any, fishermen in a season. ; It offers the fisherman everything from a hike for fish to a two week horse pack trip. It stands to reason, however, that the farther away from the nearest road you get, the better are your chances for complete isolation and better fishing. But dont expect to find lunker or rophy trout in these faraway places, because they likely arent there. Due to the long winters, short growing seasons and limited food supply in most lakes, fish seldom get e extra large. From Up to 14 or 15 inches is the average catch of most brook, cutthroat and grayling that inhabit these waters hail-uu- y pan-sLt- and others in the Ottoson Basirr Basically, it depends on when you happen to be Duck. All you have to do is know where they are and how to get them. In some river drainages the fish 4 never seem to get beyond inches. Other drainages, however, seem to produce much larger fish quite regularly. It isnt always the size of the fish that counts,' however, its mostly the experience that makes the ' difference. Most of the Uinta country doesnt open up until after July 1, sometimes later. In some years the ice hasnt gone off lakes above 11,000 feet until mid-JulThere are as many different ideas about when the best fishing is as there are fishermen. Some say right after the ice goes off in July. Others say best fishing is later in the season, after the lakes have warmed up a bit and fish are on the move in late August and September.
