Show Emery County Progress, Castle Eldon Miller There are kids and then there are kids. Some of the kids I grew up with in Clawson, the kind that is, are easier to remember than others. For instance, one boy I remember only because I was impressed with how large his chest was. I remember that because of me seeing his chest expanded as he was taking off his to go in swimming. I was a little envious at the sight as I two-legge- d rt remember. Another kid was one I didnt like too much because he often found occasion to make fun of me. Another was a year of two older than me and when he would pay attention to me I felt important. I later found occasion to loose respect for him however. It happened this way. I had found a baby bird hawk (a kestrel) and raised it to adulthood I marked it by putting some of . my sisters lipstick on its chest. It would eat from my hand and, even after it learned to fly, it stayed close around and would fly down and perch on my arm. I even carried it around on my shoulder. My mother didnt like me to cany it on my shoulder however, and eventually made me wash my own shirts. In Clawson, most boys were proficient with flippers. These were made with a crouched tree branch, two rubber bands and a leather pocket to hold the missile (rock or marble) m. My pet would roost in one of the trees in our yard so I would see it almost daily. But it ended up not being around for about three or fou r day s so I started inquiring around to see if anyone had seen it. I was notified that it had been killed by this fellow that I had respected. I never did approach him about it though, and so I never found out if he had killed it accidently or on purpose. Another fellow I remember quite well was one that used to take advantage of my good nature by Dear Editor: Wewouldliketo write thisletter to the editor in support of Karen Tniman as Emery County Clerk Auditor. We know that during the 12years Karen wasEmery County Auditorshewasexceptionally competent and thorough. For example, she initiated the doing such things as shooting me in the chest with a BB gun. Oh yes, there were some fellows that were helpful in teaching me how to grow to be a man among men. You see, I never really lived in Clawson veiy long at a time. My father was a coal mi ner and du n ng the summers we would either move to Clawson, or I would just spend most of the summer there wit h my Aunt Belle or Aunt I Ian. So when I would airive all the fellows were as glad to see me as I was to see them. They were tired of picking on each other or were educated enough to not fall for some of the things a newcomer like me was apt to fall for. Well, some of the things I learned from these idols were things I do not do today. F or instance, haveyou ever had' the experience of smoking dried coffee grou nds, J u niper ( Cedar) bark, or been t old that bull dung was what they made Bull Durham Tobacco from, and so it was OK to smoke that? Indian Tobacco is a Clawson name for the dried Curly Dock seeds. These were especially fun to smoke rolled up in an piece of newspaper. The only thing you really had to do if you lived through that ordeal was to come up with a good reason to explain the little burn holes in your I ovis to your Mother or Aunt. You see, they would fall off the end of the rolled cigarette still buminghot on you r trouser legs. Yes, they were still burning as they reached the bare leg, too. My excuse was I was standing too close to a bon fonnationoftheCountyspartially health insurance plan resulting in savings of thousands of dollars in health insurance preself-funde- d , miums. One year a several hundred thousand dollar state assessedprop-ert- y tax payment was received the yearafteritwasdue.TheStateTax Commission wrote Karen a letter telling her that the money was a windfall and she would have to reduce the current year budget by that amount. With her knowledge of the issue, her aggressiveness and persistence we did not have to reduce our budget. Karen always worked very well with other county officials, state officials and the employees of Emeiy County. Karen served in several positions in the Utah Association of Counties and on committees in that association. Through her diligence working on one committee with the State Auditors Office and State Tax Commission the results were the retention ofmore ofour tax dollars in Emqry County. As president of the UAC she appointed and organized the first UaC Local Government Compre- Continued from page 9A) the board in question is not named, but is there a possibility it is a small board of possibly three or four members? Is it possible they use their own time and provide their own transportation prior to this meeting to incur the expenses? Would the county be ahead to disband the particular board and hire a person to fulfil the responsibilities of said board? Would the salary for this person, plus providing transportation, office space, employee benefits, personal expenses, etc. actually cost the county more money than it pays the board members each month? Is this board saving our tax dollars or costing us more as taxpayers? Unfortunately for us as taxpayers the end of Mr. Barneys letter is very true. If we want t c maintain the currently level of standards the county has at the present time i.e. adequate emergency services, police and fire protection, maintained roads, etc. the taxes on our homes and businesses will continue to increase, due in part to the centrally assessed properties taxes being decreased. Because of her knowledge of Dear Editor: We Utahns have established a legacy of caring for our natural resources. Out lakes are pure. Our air is clean . Our wildlife is thriving. Our mountains, and the streams which wehave throughout, are the envy of the nation. Why then would we want to allow outside interest groups to come into Utah and ruin what we ve worked so hard to maintain? Agreatcureforatender bottom after riding a horse bare back all day was to be talked into dropping your pants and bending over so your older cousin, whom you had no reason not to trust, poured some special liniment (nibbing alcoformula, Tender-bottohol) as he called it, down your backside. rDiat treatment was a experience. m As Utalms, we welcome people from all parts of the earth into our state to enjoy our wildlife and wild lands. But when it comes to making decisions about the welfare of Utahs natural resources, thats Utahs business. s Proposition 5 requires a vote by citizens of our state before any changes are made in the management of our wildlife and wild lands. It is our only pro- two-third- tection against special interest spectrum who want to use our states natural treasures to raise money and push their political propaganda. We can keep our wildlife and wild lands in the hands of Utahs citizens by voting yes on prop. 5. Unfortunately for many of us, elections are a personality contest as we do not take the time to educate ourselves about the qualifications of each position, and the qualifications of the candidate for that position, to make an informed vote.. All the candidates are our friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. We see them in our daily lives. They are all great people. If you have any concerns about their qualifications call them.
