Castle Dale UtahTuesday, October 27, 1998 Letters to the editor Commissioner ad misleading Good times sprang from bad luck at into Joes Valley, and we were both very tired as we finally approached the Forest Service cabin. We had hoped we would find someone there who could help us. But the closer we got, the more obvious it became that it was uninhabited. Still, we kept going until we were near enough to the cabin to peer inside the window. As we did, a ray of hope sprung up, when we caught sight of an old wall telephone. Maybe, just maybe, it might be in operating condition, and we could call out for our help. I tried the door, but found it to be securely locked. Next, I checked the windows and found one that was not locked. It was stuck tight, but not locked. By the time we had struggled and worked to get that window open, and crawled through, we both were feeling a little like a couple of bur- Before there was a Joes Valley Reservoir, there was a Joes Valley. For years, we (my Dad and brothers) would make an annual trek across the floor of Joes Valley to reach our coveted goal, and deer hunt mg grounds; out on Horn Mountain. There was a Forest Service cabin close to the mouth of Straight Canyon, and just to the East ofthecabm wasa small stream with some of the best watercress in it youd ever taste. Almost a mile South of the cabin was where Fd had a flat tiredunnga deer hunt (with no spare tire), in my old 39 Chevrolet. I had to walk over Horn Mountain, down Rock Canyon, to get Dads help. It was the last day of t he deer hunt. I had been successful t he ery first day of the hunt, but Dad still hadn't got the chance for his. We had hunted every day we could, but with no success. So. w hen we went back to get my car, we didn't even take a gun with us. It was dusk as we approached the car, and, wouldn't you know it, a three point buck leaped over the fence alongside the road, and stood broadside to us on the road ahead I guess the most memorable time in Joes Valley was when Carolyn and I decided to spend a few days of on r honeymoon at what most people call Grassy Rake. We called it Lost Lake. What a wonderful time that was, until it was time to leave. Thats when we realized t he battery in t he car was dead. We tried everything we could think of to start the car. but finally realized the only recourse we had was to walk down and get some help. Now, know that a lot of women would probably have done a lot of complaining about the decision to walk down. But Carolyn made light of it, and even tried to make a game out of the venture. It was a long walk from the lake down Joes Valley the sound of an engine reached our ears, along with rattling and the other sounds associated with an approaching vehicle. What a stroke of good fortune! We congratulated ourselves, and waited for it to come into full view. When it did, our joy turned to disappointment. There, a few hundred yards away was coming toward us the strangest vehicle we had seen. It was a car. But it had been stripped down, until all that was left was a front seat, the steering wheel, and the gas tank on the back. I believe the owners called it a jitterbug. As it drew even closer, we could see that it was Andy Jensen, Dean Jorgensen, and Terry Aklund, from Clawson. They came to a stop next to us, with a cloud of dust swirling all about. Weve got trouble with our car, I filled them in. We were hoping for a ride, but it doesnt look like youve got any place to glars. In a moment, 1 Dont assume you know how someone is feeling Do you read minds or know someone who does? Do you always assume that you know what your spouse or child feels or thinks? When someone dot's t ry to express an idea or feeling do you assume you Know what they really mean Or do you tiy to test out the meaning wit h them? Communication by mind leading is often used in some households. Some people always speak for others m their family Many times the other wants to say, "You do not know my feelings (or thoughts). But they dont know how, or are afraid to. If the latter is your situation, you might begin by calmly saying, It may seem to you that I feel that way (or think that), but really this is what I feel... Then try to explain how you feel or think. We need to be willing totake time to be sure others know what we mean and to check out that we really know what another is saying. Even if it feels strange, tiy saying something like, Areyousayingthat...orDoyou mean... Then try to restate in your own words what the other just said. Your partner in conversation can say yes and add to it, if she wishes, or say, This is what I meant... and tiy to say it again. How many less hurt feelings, disappointments and misunderstandings could be avoided, if we would be careful to check with one another. It will take awhile to remember, if you are not used to it. But it is worth the effort. Proposition 5 is about fairness. Itsaboutresponsiblestewardship. Its about shutting the door on special interest groups who want to manipulate our natural resource management policies to suit there own political agenda. I dont care ifyoure ahunter or fisherman, environmentalactivist or animal rights advocate. Ifyoure not a citizen of Utah, you have no business deciding the fate and future of our wildlife and wild lands. Proposition 5 sends a clear message to powerful special interest lobbies to stay out of our state and stay away from our resources. Theyre ours to care for and control. Let Utahns take care of Utah.
