Health, has established and funded the Genome Project, the goal of which is to identify and map the locations of all human genes by the year 2005. To date, over 4,500 diseases have been identified as being hereditary or genetically linked. The storage of the DNA of family members will provide physicians with critical reference points which tell doctors where to look when testing a family for genetic disease. The purpose of DNA banking is to create a genetic medical history of family members, so that children and grandchildren will be able to compare their genetic makeup with the stored DNA to determine their predisposition to inherited diseases. Today, 75 percent of all disease diagnoses are made as a result of having a familys medical history. The value of knowing a familys medical history can save their life and the lives of their loved ones, as well as halt the repeated appearance of family things, including the diseases you inherit. Each gene is a section of DNA in the nucleus; the core of the cell. The DNA forms bundles called chromosomes. A full set of chromosomes (46) in each cell carries all the traits you have inherited. It is your Ge- - your familys medical history can help save your life. DNA is the abbreviated name for the chemical molecule that makes up genes: Deoxyribonucleic acid. Because life is unpredictable, the most important family members, on both sides of the family, to have their DNA banked are the more senior members. Medical and research experts agree that a minimum of three generations of DNA specimens are needed to optimally identify a potential genetic disease. Individuals, especially over 50 years of age, will gain peace of mind with the knowledge and confi The federal government, through the National Institute of dence that their family genetic history is preserved for future generations of time. The last opportunity to collect DNA is at death. As owners of the Spanish Valley Mortuary, with a philosophy of education and service, Larry Turpen and myself have joined in partnership with GeneLink, the worlds DNA bank first and hereditary genetic information service based at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. Chuck was bom in Brooklyn, and grew up in Brooklyn and Long Island. His father, of Danish descent as shown by the spelling of the family name with an e, was chief of Narcotics Police in the New York Coast Guard. His mother died when Chuck was only 18 years old. He graduated from Penn State University, having decided against his fathers wish that he become a lawyer. His first job was with JP Morgan of New York. Later he moved to Southern California and went into real estate. He then was employed in the insurance business for a number of years in Northern California, but returned to real estate. He loved working with people, and had a happy disposition throughout his life. During the years in California, Chucks favorite pastime was sailing. He loved the ocean and sailboats, and would sail from Pasadena to San Francisco and all around the California coast. He had many exciting stories from his sailing trips. He met his wife, Greta,' a wee Scots lass, in Northern California and they have been together for 20 years. Both Chuck and Greta had been married before, but this time Chuck not only got a wife, but also a whole Scottish family: a daughter, Caroline and Duncan, who live in Moab; a son John and wife Lynn and four granddaughters, Clare, Susan, Karen and Janet, who all live in England. Chuck and Greta moved to Moab six years ago and have made many good friends. They have both truly enjoyed living here, but Chuck missed his sailing and the ocean. His heart was always by the sea. Chuck has had a few rough years, complained very little, and fought to the end. He worked until the last few weeks of his life. His birthday was March 31, so he made it to his 80th year. He shared a birthday with Caroline, both Aries, which he loved. John and Lynn and granddaughters called from England and all were able to speak to each other before his passing. Gretas brother Harry Bell, who lives in Scotland, and Chuck were brothers in Masonry and NY, 9 FRI.
