Thats not just a figure of speech human skin doesnt hold a chance against safety glass. Thats why some cyclists took offense at the ad for Ricks Glass in the April 1 Advertiser. The ad features two people in a vintage automobile, cringing as a cyclist flies through a windshield. The car obviously needs new glass, but some people see a larger tragedy in the drawing. Rick Thompson, owner of Ricks Glass, says he didnt mean to inspire any hard feelings. Its Three Stooges humor which isnt politically correct, Thompson said. But I dont want to defend it; I didnt mean to inspire any ill feelings. I dont like the us and them thing. All of us are more alike than different. Im a motorcyclist, and I know how vulnerable you are out there. While Thompson doesnt ride himself, his wife is a regular rider, and he says he supports the right to ride safely on public roads. Thompson added he wont be running the ad again. For more on how such a small issue could mean so much, check out On Two Wheels four weeks from now when Ill be doing a story on the animosity between cyclists and, well, some other people out there. 2 As always, please call me at if you have information for this section. Or, better yet, email me at thin-skinne- tours, personalized Dreamrides will be offering bike clinics designed to introduce mountain bikers to the extreme side of riding. With former Utah Downhill Champion Nathan Toone as coach, these clinics should take riders where theyve never been before. Trail Repair Efforts around On March 28 eleven folks Moab including tourists, Bureau of Land Management employees, Moab Bike Club members, and one motorcycle tour operator turned out to do some repair work on Porcupine Rim Trail. The volunteers spent some six hours in the rain and hail, blocking off new routes on the singletrack section at the bottom of the trail. While some riders ignored the barricades that same day, the hope is riders can be kept on the trail. Since this section of trail does dip into a Wilderness Study Area, it could be subject to closure at any time if the BLM decides the areas wilderness value is being compromised. Coming up next, for those of you who would like to help with trail efforts, there will be a Trail Day April 18. This one is sponsored by the Moab Bike Patrol, and will likely take place on Klondike Bluffs, weather permitting (in case of bad .weather the location may be moved to Porcupine Rim once more). To participate show up at the BLM shed located next to the cemetery at the turnoff to the Slickrock Trail at 9 a.m. April 18. And Now For Something Com- - 259-305- ronsuetimp.net.
