Show Sunday, November 22, 1970 Outdoor Roundup! 'j' By BOB D1PIETRO UPI Sports Writer Almost all pro football fans expected the Cincinnati Bengals to have a losing record at this stage of the season. What n Utah's fish and game board met to set recently management policies covering fish and game operations. One item on the five-ma- meetii agenda, setting regulations for the the governing angling season, turned discussion when the rule covering baits and chumming came up for discussion. Board members come from the state's five fish and game districts and as laymen policy makers represent the best interests of the outdoorsmen in those districts. A majority of the board feel that those interests will best be served by banning many of the liberalized bait fishing laws common to the last decade. Finale of this lively discussion saw the board deciding to "experiment" during the 1971 season by banning the use of corn and all chumming on a limited number of waters. They are the Green River below Flaming Gorge dam, Koosharem Reservoir, and those three streams already set aside as quality waters, namely the Wild Strawberry and upper portions of the Blacksmith's Fork and Weber. Since one cannot imagine "purist" anglers chumming these quality waters where bait is taboo anyway, the test of this new rule will fall on the Green River and Koosharem. The tester produces some exceptional fish growth, as chemically treated in the fall of 1969 to remove excessive trash fish populations, restocked and will be opened again to angling next May 29, with the general season. So it will be Lteresting to note a year hence the results of this experiment. What will the public response be, the comparative catch of trout, the bettering of pollution problems, to name just a few items of concern to the board? . Certainly any pronounced reduction in the littering problem (cans, cheese cartons, etc.) would merit serious consideration of moving beyond the experiment. Any thoughts you readers may have regarding a restriction of either baits or chumming will be passed along to the board if you will just drop us a line. After all, they ARE your representatives. Other angling regulations for 1971 find the basic trout limits as they were this year except the limit of eight has been reduced to six on the Green River below the dam and the six fish bonus limit of brook-nativ- e has been removed from the waters of Summit and Wasatch counties and that portion of Duchesne County within Wasatch Forest boundaries. One other trout limit change allows for the taking of only two mackinaw in any limit from Bear Lake. By comparison, it was the only second time this season the Golden Eagles have played in tie games. The deadlock enabled the Denver club to move into a tie with San Diego for third place in the league standings, as the Gulls lost to Portland Friday night. Both the Spurs and Gulls had 20 points after Friday night's action. Both goals in the Denver-Sal- t Lake game were scored in the second period, with the Golden Eagles' goal coming at the 1:01 mark and the one for the Spurs after 11:33 had been played. Brian McDonald, who was recently acquired from the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League, scored the Salt Lake goal on assists by Francois Lacombe and Barry Watson. The Denver goal was scored by Claude LaForge on an assist by Bob McCord. In addition to scoring Salt Lake's lone goal of the game, McDonald was all over the ice once again, givirg a great display of deft and hard swift skating, just as he had in the Salt Lakers' 2 victory over the Phoenix Roadrunners last Wednesday night. McDonald and Guyle Fielder g used their talents in senujig the Golden Eagles on attacking forays down the rink and only some great checking by Denver's defensemen Larry Mavety and McCord probably kept the Eagles from scoring more than they did, especially in the first and third periods, when the Eagles really put the pressure on the Coloradoans. Both goalies, Rick Charron of the Eagles and Wayne Rutledge of the Spurs, were superb in the nets, as they came up with one big save after another as the action swung up and down rink at breakneck speed. Charron came up with 30 saves for the game, while Rutledge had 25. Both teams skated hard and fast and were extremely aggressive on the attack in the first period, but neither could get on the scoreboard, even though each team had plenty of chances. The passing of Fielder was particularly impressive during that first period and on one foray down the ice late in the session, he set up teammates with some stick-handli- 4-- slick-passin- Press International Is this Johnny Vaught's final year as head coach of the Mississippi Rebels? Salt lake kept pressing early in the second period and the whirlwind attack produced the Eagles' goal. However, later in the period, Denver seemed to take the play away from the Eagles and did a little all-opressing of their own that for few moments appeared to have the Men of Coach Gus Bodnar on the run. Denver's Lyle Bradley missed a great scoring chance late in the period, when he failed to convert a rebound shot right in front of the not. In the third period, Watson had two great scoring chances, one of them on a power play, and McDonald came back later in the session with scoring opportunities on powerplays, but missed on both.
