Many programs are available in which the family can become involved and help themselves first, then in turn, help the abuser. If a family member is afflicted with diabetes, heart disease or cancer, other members want to learn all they can about the disease and what they can do to help. If a member is afflicted with drug and alcohol abuse, it should also be considered a disease, and the entire family should get involved in helping cure it. There's no shame in admitting that the problem exists. The shame comes from having someone addicted and doing nothing about it. Anyone reading this article who has a family member afflicted by drug or alcohol abuse can get help by calling the Social Actions Office. By Connie Hanney Social Actions Office National Family Week has just been celebrated. It would be a great idea if every family would become aware of the pro- blems associated with drug and alcohol abuse and how it affects the entire family. Once a family stops denying that their loved one has a drug or alcohol problem, it will be hard for the abuser to deny he or she has a problem. The family plays a big part in pro- gression of alcoholism. It does not cause anyone to drink or use drugs, but the family does play an important role in the denial and game playing. Before a family can help an addicted person, it needs to help itself first. For a change to begin to happen, the family needs to know the role it plays. When allowed to go on uninterrupted, it ends in a closing act of family . ' . I i 1 ! I ) i ' t ! i i i ; ' t i I ? I i 1 X ; "t |
