Show 211 3 Yemal tXpreSSHdVemSef Wednesday, March 20, 1 985 As the last snow of winter is . melting it is time to start thinking about your garden. Before you can ever get into your garden, begin by taking inventory of your fruit room or cellar. By doing this from year to year you will be able to see how much you've used and anticipate what you need to plant. Choose a garden site free from shade with rich loamy soil free from weeds. The first step in planting is planning. Before you buy a single seed, plan your garden completely on paper, indicating size and content, number of rows it will accommodate, where in the garden each variety will be planted Determine row width by the type of varieties of vegetables to be grown, the type of equipment you will use for cultivation and the irrigation ir-rigation method to be used. Plan to plant vegetables your family likes and will eat. Plant in sensible quantities, timed for ripening ripen-ing at sensible intervals. Consider which species and varieties are best to can or freeze, so that all the produce need not be eaten fresh, but can grace the family fami-ly table throughout the fall and winter. Plan your planting dates to take I advantage of each particular vegetable variety's inherent grow-, ing habits. Also, plan to plant some varieties at different times so the maturity dates can be extended over a longer period of time. PLANTING SCHEDULE Early spring (as soon as ground can be worked): pea, radish, spinach and onion seeds; onion sets. Mid-spring (when there is little chance of late frosts and soil has become relatively warm): beet, BASIN RENTALS is under new ownership Larry Peterson ami n nvw location 789 West Main 789-5267 HI r Get your garden ready with a rented ROTOTILLER Make your lawn look great uith n borrowed LAWN THATCHER Check with us for your rental needs Authorized Repair Service fpniGGS & STR Anew Lawn mower & rototiHcr tuncups, etc. carrot, lettuce and parsnip seeds; broccoli, brussel sprout, cabbage and cauliflower transplants.
