JIM SNODGRASS "smokes" a test rat as he goes into the 5th week of his science fair project on the effects of smoking. The science fair will be open to the public Tuesday, March 26 at the Junior High. It is the final days of preparation for students at Vernal Junior High-Middle High-Middle School who are entering projects pro-jects in the science fair March 25-26. Projects were begun six weeks or more ago by students of Mrs. Romney and Mr. Oviatt, science teachers at the school, to be ready for judging in the fair. Jim Snodgrass has been working closely with a controlled group of smoking and non smoking rats for the past few weeks and has come up with some interesting results. In order to test his rats for effects from cigarette smoking, Jim began with seven rats between 4 -5 weeks of age. Three were exposed to controlled controll-ed smoking every day and three were kept under normal conditions. The rats were smoking an equivalent of about two packs a day in a human. "Surprisingly enough, the rats have not become addicted," Jim said. He monitors the rats very carefully. Their food and water intake in-take is measured each day and their weight gain and consumption is noted. Every two weeks a rat is dissected and the organs carefully examined by Jim, and then they are sent on for further inspection at a state laboratory. "The rats don't like the smoke and are anxious to get away when I get them each day for exposure. They are listless, have nose bleeds, cough and have breathing difficulties after the exposure. I have found damage to lungs, trachea, and changes in glands in the smoking rats. One that I dissected was pregnant and the fetus rats were examined for damage caused from the smoke. The coat of the smoking rats is coarser and darker in color than the non smokers and they have a big build up of mucus in their throats and nose," Jim explained. ex-plained. One of the non-smoking females (who was supposed to be a male) gave birth to 14 babies as a bonus to Jim's experiment. She also is the only on-ly one who has bitten him during his experiments. Jim says smoking is a "nasty habit" and he has learned just how detrimental the effect can be on living liv-ing tissue. Ninth grade student Chalynn Goodrich has a different kind of subject sub-ject which deals with exposure. She has three small green houses filled with radish sprouts which are exposed expos-ed to exhaust from leaded and un- C I x CDirlF m Bwwm m mM L J -war- v FUL-PRUF- FUL-PRUF LATEX FLAT WAIL PAINT O.'f-r 1 CC1 C?-ifS NOW $995 181 HJllfS IftTtlf I-GIOSS ENfl r Interior! Exhaust is collected in plastic bags and squeezed into the green houses. Chalynn notes the changes in leaves and growth of the plants. She has seen things like spots on the leaves and misshapen, curled leaves and slow growth in the exposed plants. Also the stomates of the plants which control the water inside the stems and leaves have shown the effects of exposure. Mrs. Romney says students create their own research projects and having hav-ing a whole year of science in 6- 7 and 8 grade and a well coordinated science program gives students better bet-ter opportunity for experimentation and projects like Jim and Chalynn's. The science fair will be open to the public at the Junior High on Tuesday, March 26 from 1 to 6:30 p.m. followed by the awards assembly. Entries from local winners at the elementary level will be included in the fair. The state science fair competition will be April 11 and 12. UTILIZING KID POWER Does your house have kid power? Make use of it. Leave instructions for the children about what they can do to start dinner before you arrive home; then finish up the meal for them in minutes. Form a Saturday-morning cleanup team, with money or fun work incentives. 5V 1 : r f Vl ; v , I I f civ - BROWNIES OF THE Discovery troop enjoy attacking a pinata as the girls wrapped up the celebration of Girl Scout Week.
