Myrtle Collins Cook, teacher at Todd Elementary School, has been selected as Uintah School District's teacher of the month. Mrs. Cook was born and raised in Roosevelt. She was educated in the Roosevelt elementary schools. When she was in ninth grade, her family moved to Ballard. She attended and graduated with honors from Alterra High School. Desirous of becoming a secretary, Mrs. Cook went to the LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. She returned return-ed home and worked as a bookkeeper and secretary in the Roosevelt area until she was called to serve an LDS mission in Brazil. Upon returning from South America, Mrs. Cook married Orlan Cook and they became the parents of four children. She began taking college, classes at the Uintah Basin Center for Continuing Education and graduated Cum Laude from Utah State University Univer-sity with a degree in elementary education. Since then she has taught second, third, fifth and sixth grades at Todd Elementary. She has been instrumental instrumen-tal in organizing the Uintah Basin Council of the International Reading Association and served as its first president. She has been a presentor at several UEA, IRA and UCTE conferences. con-ferences. She has also completed a Masters degree in education from USU. Her classroom is stimulating and expresses ex-presses a feeling of "things happening." happen-ing." Her desire is to help each student cultivate a healthy self image and to have a good attitude about school and learning. She wants students to improve im-prove their academic skills, but she also wants her students to care about and be able to work with other children in the room. Mrs. Cook respects teachers and the teaching profession. She feels herself fortunate to have associated with, and learned from so many. They are her friends and her wish is to be considered con-sidered worthy to be one of them a teacher.
