Show t 1 6 S Vernal ExpressAdvertiser Wednesday, March 20, 1985 Raising baby animals a springtime project The beginning of spring is the perfect time to start a new project including raising baby animals. Rather than just raising the traditional kittens and puppies this summer, area residents also have the opportunity to raise animals traditionally thought of as farm animals such as ducks, chickens, peafowls, turkeys, rabbits and guinea hens. Raising one of the animals can be a learning experience ex-perience for youths as well as adults. Raising the animals from a baby is a good opportunity to see "nature in action" said Gene An-finson An-finson of Ponderosa Feed and Tack. Raising the animals is also an excellent opportunity for youths involved in the 4-H program or junior livestock. The animals can not only be raised rais-ed as nontraditional pets but as a food source as well. Written guides and other supplies are available to insure the proper care and feeding of each of the animals. For business minded individuals there is a guide available to help residents start a quail farm. Anfin-son Anfin-son said quail farming can be a very lucrative business if handled correctly. Quails will begin laying eggs six weeks after they are born. Animals that are available through Ponderosa Feed and Tack come from various locations. Most of the chicks, ducklings and turkeys are brought in from Privett Hatchery in Fort Tallas, N.M. The game birds are brought in from California and all the rabbits rab-bits are raised locally. Ponderosa handles a variety of different types of ducks and 21 different dif-ferent kinds of chicken. The baby ducks and chickens are currently kept in a bruder to insure their good health. Other types of animals will be brought into the area within the next few weeks. In addition to the animals available at Ponderosa, baby animals are springing up throughout the valley. Lambs, baby goats and calves are visible all through the Uintah Basin. 11 '. , S W.Si V I ts' i . r, f 1 : '.x. v J 4 "HERE'S LOOKING at you kid," says a newborn goat as he nuzzles his brother. m f ..V ,: . f W T - 2f w r RAISING BABY animals such as these chicks can be a tun and rewarding experience.
