Show DECA students earn honors at convention SALT LAKE CITY--Valerie Wise and Kevin Gillespie, students at Woods Cross High School, received top recognition at the state DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of American) convention that was held earlier this month at the Red Lion Inn in Salt Lake City. Valerie was one of three Utah students to qualify for national competition that will be held at the end of April in San Jose, Calif. She received this recognition in the advertising and display category. Kevin was elected State DECA Vice President for the northern region. This position qualified him for attendance at the national convention. con-vention. A senior at Woods Cross, Valerie passed a written test that included very specific questions about running run-ning a retail business, marketing techniques, display techniques and pricing. The second round of competition was an oral event. Valerie had to add up the costs for an advertising campaign. From this preliminary competition, competi-tion, thirteen finalists were selected. These individuals had to sell an advertising campaign to the judges. Although Valerie has participated par-ticipated in DECA for three years, her future plans are not in the field of business. She wants to attend the University of Utah and major in psychology. A junior at Woods Cross High, Kevin is the vice president of the school's DECA organization. He has taken classes in fashion merchandising, retailing, marketing and accounting. Kevin is looking forward to working as a state officer next year. |
