S ...J By DAVE ROWLAND Chronicle Staff Writer The most positive way to control Communism in the United States is to demand a self-imposed political polit-ical moderation on the part of each citizen, said a Communist expert currently working with the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Arbor Gray of the FBI told an audience assembled in Orson Spencer Spen-cer Hall Auditorium Friday evening that American communists are watching the movements of organizations organ-izations on both sides of the political politi-cal spectrum. He explained each side presents them with propaganda advantages. The communists are looking at the new left and trying to infiltrate it because the ideas expressed are closest to their own in this country, according to Mr. Gray. "Don't get me wrong though. Most people in the left wing movements move-ments are not communists. The new left is largely composed of unsatisfied un-satisfied elements." He said in the case of the young, strict understanding under-standing of the movement is essential essen-tial because the communists often seek to influence them first. "We must watch the new left," he said. "The communists are." Communism to Blame Turning to right wing activities, Mr. Gray said whereas "yesterday fascism was to blame for all the ills of the world; today Communism similarly is to blame" in the minds of those associated with the radical right. He defined the intent of the right wing as to overthrow of current cur-rent government and secure an iron-fisted constitutional order. He explained, "Communism is more a sympton of social ills than it is a cause" and that communism is hardly completely to blame for all of the countries problems. "If we had no communist threat in this country, we would still have problems," he observed. "They (Continued on Page G) ARBOR GRAY . . from FBI Moderation In Politics Can Control Communism (Continued from Page 1) know this and they use that fact to their advantage." He accused the conservative radical rad-ical right of inadvertently helping the communist cause by turning rational thinking citizens against their sometimes outlandish accusa tions and propaganda methods. "Those who would use communist tactics help the communist cause," he said. The main problem among those in the rightist movements is they can't identify the problem of Communism. Com-munism. "How then, can they hope to solve it," he asked. In speaking of the nature of Communism Com-munism in the United States, Mr. Gray warned his audience that the subversive movement will not be finished until the ultimate goal of World Communism is achieved. He said the statement of a communist leader he helped to defect told him that in subversion courses, intelligence intelli-gence trainees were told to view Communism as a "broad highway." An automobile can drive on either side of the road and still reach its destination, which in the communist case means world takeover. Violence If Necessary "They hope to take the country by using strategy," Gray explained. "They will come to power peacefully peace-fully if possible, but they are always al-ways ready to resort to violence if it appears to be the only successful method." Gray listed the four communist organizations in the United States as the legal apparatus, the illegal apparatus and the legal and illegal network of espionage and intelligence intelli-gence gathering. He said while those in the legal party have tabs by which the government can tie them down, the illegal organization has an undetermined strength. He said in the illegal infiltration organization, an agent can enter a town, marry, get a business, become be-come a pillar of the church during a period of sometimes over a dozen years without receiving any instructions instruc-tions from the party as to the nature of his assignment. "The instructions instruc-tions will eventually come," Mr. Gray said. Assuring the group that America is "morally superior to any communist com-munist nation," Mr. Gray urged his audience to use "Christian morals mor-als to combat the enemy. We must fire this democratic spirit throughout through-out the world." |
